“Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” written by William Shakespeare illustrates that once a tragic hero is empowered by a tragic flaw is bound to face a tragic dilemma. In Hamlet’s case his tragic flaw caused chaos and conflict between himself and those around him resulting in many casualties. Since “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” is a drama, that means it holds up a mirror to society about some of the issues that we face in life. This play reflects how one’s conscience and sensitivity can have an effect on how you deal with certain situations around you. This seemed to be Hamlet’s main issue. Throughout this whole play Hamlet can be seen as an enigma because you never knew what his next move would have been. The reason as to why Hamlet dealt with situations …show more content…
Hamlet knew all that he needed to know yet he did not do what he should have done. Instead he runs circles around the situation instead of doing what he should have done. Procrastination seems to work out in the beginning but, majority of the time it catches up with us in the end. Procrastination is seen all heavily in society today. We tend to try to run away from our responsibilities and what we should do instead of just dealing with them and getting them out of the way. In college this is mostly seen when it comes down to school work. Usually when you leave it until the last minute it never seems to go right. There were many moments when Hamlet had a chance to do something about the situation but all he decided to do was act crazy. In doing so all he was doing was running around the situation. He thought that he was approaching the problem when all he really was doing was running away from the situation at …show more content…
Throughout the whole the who approaches everybody except the person he has the problem with. Even though Hamlet knew all the information that he needed he still did not approach the person that he needed to deal with. Many of the problems that Hamlet encountered could have been avoided if he did not have confrontational issues. As a matter of fact, the play would not have ended the way it did if Hamlet just approached the person that he needed to approach. If that was done, he could have taken Claudius out and there would have been no need for all those deaths to take place. There are people like this in society today. When they have a problem with someone, they would never approach that particular person. They may go to people who are around that person but they never got to that person directly. This often causes more harm than good. Most of the time the problem can be easily solved if they would just confront the person that they have the issue with instead of running from
Many people have seen Hamlet as a play about uncertainty and about Hamlet's failure to act appropriately. It is very interesting to consider that the play shows many uncertainties that lives are built upon, or how many unknown quantities are taken for granted when people act or when they evaluate one another's actions. Hamlet is an especially intriguing production, both on the set and on the screen because of its uniqueness to be different from what most people expect to be in a revenge themed play. Hamlet's cynicism and insane like behavior cause him to seem indecisive, but in reality he is always judging and contemplating his actions in the back of his mind in order to seek revenge for the murder of
One would agree that Hamlet was a lonely character. In the entire play he isolated himself because of the things that he did and the secrets that he had. He had very few friends and he started to not trust humanity. His loneliness was a major contributor to his tragic downfall. The reason for this is because it kept him away from his friend and family and then eventually it started to make him go crazy and make the wrong decisions or so he wanted it to seem. According to the play Hamlet was informed that his Uncle killed his father. He did not want to let anyone know the news that he found out about his father’s death. He also did not want to tell anyone that he knew about the ghost of his father. He couldn't even trust his friends and
Shakespeare's play, Hamlet illustrates the tragedy of a young prince's pursuit to obtain revenge for a corrupt act, the murder of his father. As the exposition unfolds, we find Prince Hamlet struggling with internal conflict over who and what was behind his father's death. His struggle continues as he awaits the mystic appearance of a ghost who is reported to resemble his father. Suddenly it appears, proclaiming, "Pity me not, but lend thy serious hearing / To what I shall unfold" (1.5.5-6). The ghost continues to speak providing an important clue: "The serpent that did sting thy father's life / Now wears his crown" (1.5.38-39). In short, this passage reveals evidence leading to the identity of whom
Hamlet comes across as both a hero and a villain throughout ‘Hamlet’ at different intervals. His loyalty, morality, honesty and popularity are certainly heroic traits however one can’t deny his villainous ways in his dealings with Ophelia, his killing of Polonius and most importantly his delaying of killing Claudius. Hamlet is full of faults yet full of honourable intentions. His negative qualities are slim compared to his heroic qualities therefore I believe Hamlet to be a hero, a “prince among men”.
Next dilemma is a consequence of royal position. As a king, Claudius is accompanied by subordinates almost all the time, hence it would be hard for Hamlet to kill him without any witnesses. Many people argue with this theory, for the reason that the prince had ideal situation to kill Claudius
Hamlet experiences a tremendous amount of internal conflict throughout the play. He is constantly debating whether or not he should face his troubles. This sense of uncertainty comes from a lack of self confidence,
Hamlet is a character that we love to read about and analyze. His character is so realistic, and he is so romantic and idealistic that it is hard not to like him. He is the typical young scholar facing the harsh reality of the real world. In this play, Hamlet has come to a time in his life where he has to see things as they really are. Hamlet is an initiation story. Mordecai Marcus states "some initiations take their protagonists across a threshold of maturity and understanding but leave them enmeshed in a struggle for certainty"(234). And this is what happens to Hamlet.
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet must deal with both external and internal conflict. Hamlet encounters many struggles and has trouble finding a way to deal with them. With so many corrupt people in his life, Hamlet feels as if there is no one that he can trust and begins to isolate himself from others. A result from this isolation leads Hamlet to become melancholy. Hamlet struggles with suicidal thoughts, wants to kill King Claudius, and is distraught over his mother’s hasty marriage with his uncle Claudius.
With Hamlet’s tragic flaw being his inability to act, he is plagued throughout the play by his immense intelligence and philosophical nature, which causes him to overanalyze each situation, rendering him unable to carry out any action in response. This is evident in the play by the frequent delay of acting out his father’s revenge due to the uncertainty of the evidence pertaining to his uncle’s crime. Hamlet’s inability to act creates a discourse between hamlet and his consciousness, generating an abundance of stress, which causes him to become increasingly frustrated as the play progresses. This frustration leads to him at moments in the play to behave in a rash and impulsive way or acting in an inappropriate manner, contradicting his methodical and reserved disposition. It is the consequences of these “inappropriate” actions that resurfaces at the plays end, to haunt the character, as Hamlet’s inability to act while using his renowned logic and intelligence ultimately leads to his eventual demise at the plays conclusion, due to his inability to act both “effectively” and “appropriately” in critical situations.
Hamlet faces challenges throughout the play that try his inner strengths and test his ability to handle the situation. He is torn between wanting to seek justice, and avenge his father’s death. Hamlet is also caught up in an intricate web of lies and deceit, he is considered mad by most characters when in all actuality it is just playing off of the actions of others to benefit himself. He puts on different acts trying to hide the truth, which makes him seem sincerely mad to the people around him. The truth of the matter is that Hamlet can’t decide whether or not his convictions are accurate. This dilemma ultimately leads to not only the deaths of the main characters, but the downfall of the kingdom.
Hamlet, the prince of Denmark had to deal with many challenges in his personal life and his social life. Hamlet throughout the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare had to deal with his father’s death, his mother remarrying his uncle, learning his uncle murdered his father, and the betrayal of Ophelia, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. In this situation a person is given the option to fight against the struggles being imposed upon them or to cower away in the face of hardship. Hamlet originally was unsure whether to stand up for his deceased father, but eventually decided to avenge his father proving himself as a fighter. Fortinbras describes Hamlet as a soldier and that others must “speak loudly for him.”
The internal conflicts prevalent in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet are the reason why the play is viewed as a classic. Conflicts are imperative in tragic plays as conflicts are the stimulus for catastrophe in the end. The characters in Hamlet face inward conflicts that are equally important as their outward conflicts. Three characters who especially exhibit this are Hamlet, Claudius, and Ophelia. The conflicts that these characters face play a major role in their downfalls and, ultimately, their deaths. Through Claudius’ struggle to conceal the murder of King Hamlet, Ophelia’s guilt for Hamlet’s madness, and Hamlet’s inaction due to fear, Shakespeare conveys that each character faces a dilemma, in which there are no simple solutions.
He doesn’t listen to anyone but the ghost of his father after his father was killed. The reason being is because he is hurt and wants revenge. That is his number one goal throughout the whole story, is to get revenge on the man that killed his father, which was King Claudius. It makes things so much worse for Hamlet considering the fact that he is a Prince of a country and his future was so bright, and it all was taken away from him. He gets sympathy from readers because he had it made, he had everything and just like that it was all
Hamlet is aware that Claudius murdered his father, and is planning to take Claudius’ life as revenge. Later in the play, Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius, the father of Ophelia and Laertes. Laertes is led to believe that it was not an accident, and he plans revenge on Hamlet. The two characters trying for revenge ends up getting most of the people in the play killed. It is like the famous quote made by Mahatma Gandhi, “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” Often, when people try for revenge, it ends up making the situation worse than it was to begin with. This is one of the major lessons taught in Hamlet. If Hamlet had tried to take a peaceful path instead of a violent revenge, the tragedies in the play might have been avoided
