Hauna Loa
Hawaii a huge tourist hotspot due to its lovable culture and beautiful landscape, is home to the volcano Hauna Loa, considered the largest volcano on the earth, located on the island of Hawaii which also holds four others is currently sleeping after its rude awakening roughly thirty years ago but it’s not certain when she might erupt again. Mauna Loa takes us more than half, due to technology that has been so fine-tuned that it could predict an eruption months before the actual event. There was a scare about ten years ago where scientist believed it could definitely erupt due to the amount of magma going into the magma chamber, but miraculously the magma camber was expanded and created more room for the magma to collect in. Another eruption

One of the largest occurred back in 1868 and ended up being an estimated 8.0 magnitude, created landslides that buried houses and cattle in the Ka'u district of the island. At least 79 people were killed in the subsequent tsunami that resulted from the earthquake. In 1951, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake produced minor damage in the South Kona area to structures and catchment tanks. A 1983 earthquake led to $7 million in damage to roads and structures in the Ka'u, Puna and Hilo districts. A city that was almost destroyed during one of its last eruptions on the island.
Mauna Loa is considered a “shield volcano” meaning its eruption are as violent as they could be, however because of its enormous size, it will still be a reckoning, like journalist James Cave says, “Of the five active volcanoes in Hawaii, only the Kilauea and Loihi volcanoes have been quietly erupting consistently for decades. But Mauna Loa is seen as the big threat there. What Kilauea erupts in one day, Mauna Loa has erupted in 20 minutes, as it did in 1984. It came way too close to destroying Hilo, where more than 35,000 people lived at the
In the future, scientists predict that Yellowstone will erupt very violently, leaving the United States covered in inches of ash. While scientists think this will not happen for another 1 to 2 million years it could happen at any minute (Cimons). While, Hawaii's future is already beginning to unravel with a new island forming called Loihi. This new island is forming to the south of the island of Hawaii 3,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. There is a large and fierce
The last eruption began on January 3, 1983 to the present. During this time, the lava flows have unfortunately caused destruction of nearly 200 houses, resurfaced over 13km of highway with lava, destroyed the National Park visitor center, and a 700 year-old Hawaiian Temple. It has also added new coastline to the island. There are no signs that the current eruption is slowing or will end anytime soon. Kilauea has little vegetation.
This paper will provide information on the volcanoes of Hawaii, where it is known to be the home of one of the world’s largest volcanic islands, merely second to Iceland. It is not just the beautiful landscapes and wildlife that spark the interest to this particular area, but the uniqueness of the Hawaiian volcanoes and islands themselves are what make the area so significant. There will be information spanning from the history of the origin of the islands to how Hawaii must adjust to the volcanic hazards in order to keep the area livable. With these ideas in mind, I will first address background information on the area and set the scene as to what makes this area so special. Then I will transition to the history of how the
Volcanoes are one of the most destructive, yet, most beautiful things on Earth. They can make a famous city choke in its own ashes in one day, like Pompeii. Or they can turn a once damaging mountain into a graceful and peaceful home for new life, like Mount St. Helen’s. All volcanoes are unique, and no two are the same. Some erupt differently than others, some look different than others, and all are located in different spots all over the world. I learned this while completing the project and the five volcanoes I researched are examples of my discoveries. The five volcanoes I researched were Mount Hood, Mount Mageik, Long Island, Mount Muria, and Las Pilas.
The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. Because when viewed from above it seems tiny in comparison to the neighboring volcano Mauna Loa, Kilauea was originally believed to simply be a satellite of Mauna Loa instead of a distinct volcano. Research that has taken place during the last decades, however, shows that not only is Kilauea a separate volcano, but its magna-plumbing system actually goes over 60 kilometers deep into the earth. The Kilauea Volcano sits on a curved line made up of other volcanoes such as Kohala and Mauna Kea.

Since 1882, Mauna Loa has erupted 39 times. This volcano is a outstanding force of nature. Mauna Loa has amazed many people for mann years. This is a shield volcano, located on the beautiful island, Hawaii. As the Earth’s plates move, it causes more and more volcanoes to erupt. Mauna Loa is a breath-taking phenomena.
According to Christine Webster, the author of “Natural Wonders: Mauna Loa”, 98% of Mauna Loa’s surface is hardened lava flows that are less than 10,000 years old! Another fact from westhawaiitoday.com is that Mauna Loa pumps 12 million cubic meters of lava per day, which is a giant amount! Something else that is important to know is that over the past 3,000 years, Mauna Loa erupted every six years! Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843! Even though the Mauna Loa is extremely active, and can cause lots of damage, the beauty of this volcano attracts many visitors from all around the
The active volcano that I chose to research is Popocatepetl volcano. Popocatepetl volcano is an active volcano located in Mexico. The volcano is oftentimes referred to as “El Popo” by many Mexicans. El Popo is a composite cone volcano. Being a composite cone volcano, El Popo is characterized by a steep cone shape, which was created by many composite layers of material pouring out over numerous eruptions. The lava that comes out of El Popo is extremely viscous. The highly viscous lava does not travel very far, and typically cools down rapidly. Scientists believe that El Popo is about 730,000 years old. It has erupted more than 15 times since 1519. In 1994 El Popo produced gas and ash, which caused nearby towns to evacuate. The toxic
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is known for their six wondrous active and non-active volcanoes, Mahukona, Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Kohala. Mahukona is actually the first volcano that started building the Big Island of Hawaii, but has been inactive for 350,000 years. Kilauea is the youngest and the most popular active volcano on the Big Island, it has been continuously erupting since 1983 and it is the best and the most reliable active volcano to see in the world. Since 1952 there has been 36 different eruptions from the Kilauea volcano, and 90% of its surface is still less than 1000 years old. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on earth, it is as big as 56,000 ft. above its base. The Mauna Loa has erupted 150 times in
Firstly, in order to understand the Mauna Loa, one must know the type of volcano it is. The Mauna Loa is a shield volcano, that type of volcano built from a large number of fluid magma flows when it erupted for at least 100,000 years from a primary volcanic center. It take the shape for long sloping sides and extending down to the Ocean floor. Shield volcano created resemble the mixing of primary magma and Earth’s crust that mean they hold more dark minerals such as olivine and pyroxene. Two types of lava flows that can be found in the Mauna Loa are the a'a and pahoehoe. Both types of flows are mafic, meaning they contain darker minerals. They are also of low-viscosity, which means that the lava is more fluid-like and have the closer viscosity
People are afraid that this volcano will explode and are scared that something bad will happen. People are moving out of their house to a safe place to live and were forcedd to evacuate about 2,000 residents. Some people choose to move out to a safer place and away from the dangerous area. Residents are involved in this tragic event, stay in not an option for anyone dangerous gases are released and can kill anyone human inhale this dangerous gases. The event is about a volcano that is about to explode from so much pressure being built up. This event is happening in Hawaii were people want to move out. It's happening in May 4 at 11:40 a.m. The cause of this event is happening because pieces of rock are falling off to the volcano and that is making pressure built up and has to escape some we're including magma is falling below sea level. This is one of the most active volcano in the world. It will continue for 100 years no surprises this is happening because it has happened over millions of years.
La Tomatina is a food fight holiday held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol in the Valencia area of Spain. Tens of thousands of members come from all over the world to fight in a rough battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets in exactly one hour. The tomato fight has been a strong ritual in Bunol since 1940s. No one is completely certain how this event started off. Possible beliefs on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from witnesses at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the disordered aftermath of an accidental truck leakage. One of the most popular beliefs is that
The World’s largest volcano, the super volcano Caldera, is located in the heart of America’s northwest at Yellowstone National Park. This volcano has not erupted for over 640,000 years. Ellie Zolfagharifard, a journalist for Daily Mail, states that if it were to erupt, “the Yellowstone Supervolcano would be one thousand times as powerful as the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption”.
