In 1996’s film of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet written by Baz Luhrmann, the theme of heartbreak is exemplified by the characterization, setting, staging, deletions, additions, and music of the film.

Heartbreak is the theme because numerous happenings have taken place, in the text and in the film, to mold it as the theme that the 1996’s film of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet presents. In this movie, the characterization advances this theme. The characterization lets us see the journey of a character from the beginning to the end. Many character’s journeys allows the theme to arrive upon them. For example, Romeo’s characterization is unsteady. His personality is full of mistakes and contentment with life. Another scene where Capulet is abusive is when Tybalt wants to not endure Romeo. Capulet disagrees, and punches him in the face. Juliet feels heartbreak dealing with her family. If she did not marry Paris, she would be neglected and discarded by her mother and father. This heartbreak of disappointment is what Juliet feels while dealing with numerous situations upon her parents. Furthermore into the theme of heartbreak, Romeo and Juliet’s characterization as a couple develops desperately. As a result, they become heartbroken without one another. This leads to extremely traumatic results. Romeo and Juliet kill themself because of heartbreak without one another. This heartbreak of loneliness is what Romeo and Juliet kill themselves over. As a result, Mercutio’s quotes emerges back into the film. “A plague on both your houses” is what he said. This change in the diction was to fit more modernly, and to express anger of war. He was heartbroken substantially to use this quote. Therefore, this quote was an important foreshadowing into further heartbreak. The deletions and additions make this theme stronger and clearer. As a result, the deletions and additions of the film cause it to become more heartbreaking and dramatic. Also, these parts change important events in the story. This is evidence that this film is extremely different from the text. First, the movie begins with a television news reporter covering the first line in the text. As she finishes the prologue of Romeo and Juliet” the movie flashes back into time. This prologue is about Romeo and Juliet’s heartbreaking love story. “A pair of star crossed lovers take their life” is what the lady, and the narrator says. This is said twice in the beginning. This introduction is heartbreaking because it tells of how Romeo and Juliet’s love each other proceeded into death. This is only the beginning of the film, and the most heartbreaking part of the film has been told. Another part that is different is that when the Prince, the leader of the cops, meet with the Capulets and Montagues, he announces that the starting quarrel at that gas station is their third civil brawl. This shows the theme of heartbreak because it describes the rival between the two families. This rival is heartbreaking because many people end up dying from it, including Romeo and Juliet.
