Some of you may have heard of Hernando Cortez and know about his accomplishments, but many have not not. Hernando Cortes, often referred to as Hernan, was once a famous explorer. Hernan accomplished many great things and achieved very much. As an explorer typically is, Hernan is very interesting. As you read on farther in the story, you will learn just how interesting Hernando Cortes is. Hernando Cortes was born 1485 in Medellin, Spain. Medellin was a town in the Spanish province known as Extremadura. Medellin was one of the most poorest and bleakest towns in Spain. When Hernan was younger, he was often sick. He then grew out of that stage, into a very healthy strong young man. Hernan had a certain talent for getting in trouble. When …show more content…
He dreamed of growing rich and finding glory there. In 1504, when he was 19 he boarded a supply ship to travel to the new Spanish settlement on the island of Hispaniola. It was a long difficult trip. The ship’s mainmast broke in a storm and had to be repaired at the Canary islands. Then the captain lost his way, fresh water and food ran low, and the ship encountered many more storms along the way. Then the crew spotted a dove and followed the bird to arrive safely at the port town Santo Domingo in Hispaniola.
In Hispaniola, Hernan became a farmer and notary to a town council. For the first six years, he seemed to have been content to his position. He contracted syphilis and missed the expeditions of Diego de Nicuesa and Alonso de Ojeda, who sailed for the South American mainland in 1509. By 1511 he had recovered from his illness, and he sailed with Diego Velázquez to conquer Cuba. In Cuba Velázquez was appointed governor, and Cortés clerk to the treasurer. Cortés received a gift of land, Indian slaves, and the first house in the new capital of Santiago. He was now in position of power and the man to whom dissident elements in the colony began to turn for
The existence of controversy within history is a well known fact, with one of those controversies being how the colonization of America by European settlers should be viewed. Christopher Columbus is widely celebrated for his discovery of the New World, which opened up possibilities for Europeans who sought wealth and a new life. However, his enslavement of native populations and unethical tactics are not completely overlooked. Likewise, Hernando Cortés of Spain also claimed glory for his country, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. Influenced by conflicting political and ideological factors, historians take on historical events through differing aspects. The multiple works on the early colonization of the Americas by Europeans
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, also referred to as the father of Mexican independence, began his life on May 8, 1753. He was born on the ranch of San Vincente, the estate of San Diego Corraljo, in the Jurisdiction of Pénjamo, Guanajuato.[1] His parents were Don Cristóbal Hidalgo y Costilla and Doña Ana María Gallaga. Miguel Hidalgo was a Creole, meaning that he was born of pure Spanish blood in a province of Spain.[2] Don Cristóbal and Doña Ana María conceived three more sons subsequent to Miguel. All of their sons were beneficiaries to the reign of Carlos III in Spain. Carlos III allowed admittance of Creoles to colleges and universities, thus inspiring Creole fathers to send their
“One of the great themes of historical literature over the past five centuries has been the assessment of the European discovery of the Americas as one of the two greatest events in human history.” (2). A similar, better-known pronouncement was penned by Francisco Lopez de Gomara, Hernan Cortes’s private secretary
How was Hernan Cortes able to conquer the Aztec empire? The fall of the Aztec Empire was led by an expedition by Hernan Cortes, a Spanish conquistador, in 1521. Cortes’ time was the era of Exploration. He became engrossed with the tales of Christopher Columbus and decided to join the exploration. Which led him to travel to the Americas and triumph of the Aztec empire. Such as a prophecy, weaponry, translators, disease and allies.
I’m starting my first journal entry I have not had time for it yet until Now, because we have been loading all the supplies onto the boat to sail to the new world. Our General Hernando de Soto is a great leader. He commands all 600 of us he was born in 1500 and died 1542.
persuaded Velazquez to give him the command of an expedition to Mexico. And this is the beginning of Cortes’ legacy.
Hernando Cortes was a Spanish conquistador coming from a poor family in Spain. Since Cortes was a conquistador, he came to the New World in search of gold or riches. Cortes was not full into the Catholic religion but he was a Catholic and knew right from wrong in the eyes of God. When Cortes heard of the Aztec empire and of their human sacrificing to false gods, he showed them little by little the true God. Cortes ended up overthrowing the Aztec empire because one of his goals going to the New World was to seek rich land, and claim it for Spain. When Cortes first landed in the New Word it is said that he was dressed in all black because it was Good Friday.
Pizarro and Cortés were two great men in the history of the world, men who made an impact in society and left their print for future generations. There have been many conquerors and discoverers that, like them, have contributed to the advances in the world made by the human race. Discoveries and conquers have been made all over the world, in every civilization, in every period of time. History books are full of people who, in a way or another, changed the world, either by finding a cure to a certain disease, by making an important
Explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto was born c. 1500 to a noble but poor family in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain. He was raised at the family manor. A generous patron named Pedro Arias Dávila funded de Soto's education at the
Although Marina helped Cortes during his expeditions, many townspeople have very different views of Dona Marina. If you ask some people about Dona Marina some will call her a traitor because she helped aid the spaniards and helped the foreign rulers rise to power, others would say she did what she had to do to survive. She had enough intelligence to learn multiple languages and enough social skills to be a cultural mediator for foreigners who may have not necessarily gotten along.4 Why is it that throughout her years serving Hernan Cortes’, she isn’t given a higher title other than Hernan Cortes Translator. She was obviously more than this, yet due to her background and sex all of her great accomplishments go unnoticed or even worse passed on to the male who “own’s her.” This goes along with how women were treated more like property rather than human beings. She was bought by Cortes as a translator, she followed him throughout most of his expeditions and helped him achieve great success by possibly taking her ideas and calling them his own, and due to the fact that she is a woman, she doesn’t get any credit for her hard work. About a year or so after I had left Mexico, I learned that Dona Marina had married a conquistador named Juan Jaramillo and that she gave birth to her second child, a girl, this time named Dona
As a young man hernan cortes studied law, but decided to seek a fortune in the recently found New World that Christopher Columbus had recently stumbled upon. Cortes ended up first in the island of Santo Domingo the Dominican Republic in 1504 when Cortes was only 19 years of age. Hernan stayed for 11 years but then he took part in the conquest of Cuba, the year was 1511. Cortes was appointed mayor of Santiago de Cuba up until 1518. Hernan Cortes had a taste of power and enjoyed it greatly and because of this his appetite for more conquests was immense. Hernan Cortes was a hero for joining two worlds and conquering the most powerful civilization of America. Some people thought Cortes was a villain for making the Aztec Empire disappear. Hernan
The capital of the Aztec empire, Tenochtitlan, and what is known today as Mexico City was conquered in 1521 by the Spanish explorer named Hernando Cortez. Cortez was born Medellin, Spain in 1485. He was the only son of a noble family and his father was a captain in the Spanish army. He was fascinated with Christopher Columbus’ journeys in the new world. This was a far cry from his parents wish for him to be lawyer. Before reaching the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Cortes along with Diego Velazquez, were powerful figures in the island of Cuba. Their partnership soon ended when Cortes went against Velasquez’s wishes to marry his sister and sailed to the mainland of Mexico against his orders. On 1519 Cortez reached the harbor of central Veracruz (“True Cross”). He arrived with 11 ships, 15 horses and a fleet of 500 men in search for gold. Cortes soon learned that the land was ruled by the great Aztec lord in the city of Tenochtitlán: King Monezuma II.
Hernan Cortes was a fierce conquistador from Spain that grew up in a noble family. In 1504, he headed out for Hispaniola but ended up in Cuba in 1511. Cortes convinced the Cuban governor to let him be the leader and general of an expedition to Mexico. He then established Veracruz, and was elected official General. Cortes scorched his ships. His men were skeptical about
Soldier and conqueror Bernal Díaz del Castillo in his book The True History of the Conquest of New Spain labeled Hernán Cortés “a valiant, energetic, and daring captain” and compared him to the likes of Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Hannibal. Hernán Cortés was an ambitious conquistador and eventually defeated the mighty Mexican empire. A problem, however; emerges when distinguishing between the rational and romanticized versions of Cortés’ exploits. Bernal Díaz was present during the conquest, but his account was written much later and cannot be expected to be unbiased. Modern interpretations of Cortés can piece together all document and find that he stretched the truth to further his own gains. Cortés’ personality, goals, and actions have been interpreted differently since the days of the conquest, and have changed the way the conquest has been understood.
Hernando Cortes was one of the bravest military leaders of all time. Born in Medellin, Spain, he was a Spanish Conquistador who conquered most of Central America. He also gave Spain three-hundred years of control over Mexico. Cortes started exploring in the early 1500’s. He explored to find riches and conquered by being observant of the natives. With a small army, he conquered the Aztec Empire. Cortes went to the university in Salamanca, Spain. He attended the university to study Latin and Law. Unfortunately, Cortes completed only two years of school. He returned to his family in Medellin, Spain. However, life became boring for him. Nevertheless, Christopher Columbus inspired Cortes to explore the New World. Finally, Cortes was able to
