Heroes In The Odyssey

A Hero is a person who would do anything to protect his people and not expect gratitude afterwards. A person who just does things for praise is not a true hero; they shouldn't expect anything in return. In my mind, the qualities someone would need to be a hero are loyal, kind, empathetic, strong, courageous, kind hearted, and brave. Who I think of as heroic are people that try to make good changes as much as they can, for instance people who try to fight pollution are kind hearted. Or even people who donate to countries in need are empathetic/courageous, in general people who go out of their way to solve world problems are a hero in my mind. It later causes Polyphemus to grab a hill and throw it onto the boat endangering Odysseus and his crew, and although he missed Polyphemus was still angry, so he brought on the continued wrath of Poseidon. Odysseus also was unfaithful to his wife Penelope, which made him very unloyal towards her. He's unfaithful with two other women, Calypso and Circe, he claims to be held against his will yet he doesn't seem to have minded. With all that, he felt the need to test whether his wife has been loyal, which makes him a hypocrite in my opinion. Some people may say Odysseus is a hero based on his traits, and although he may have some good qualities, I still think he is not. A time in the text where Odysseus seems like a hero during his escape from the cave with his men. He cunningly thought to hide himself and his men under the sheep so that the Cyclops wouldn't see them escaping.
