Odysseus tends to use strategy over strength to be a hero when it comes to challenges. Instead of beginning with fighting the Cyclops, he takes his time and sets up a plan. Everytime he enters a new island, he does not start telling everyone that he is Odysseus, king of Ithaca. Instead, he charms the people he meets and uses his wise words that cause them to help and pity him. Odysseus represents what being a hero is actually all about. Throughout the novel The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus continuously shows his personality of being an admirable hero to everyone by using strategy instead of strength.

For generations, heroes have always fascinated people and people have strived to achieve certain qualities of their heroes. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is considered the hero of the story. While Odysseus does demonstrate some qualities that are not heroic, he is still defined as a hero because of his better, more heroic qualities in which he is far superior in than any other man. The qualities in which define Odysseus as a hero are courage, intelligence, and leadership.

In nearly every book, the protagonist is portrayed as being the hero of the story. It could be a brave knight saving a princess, a bold leader winning a war, or just one person helping another. But for a good hero to rise up, there must be a problem to face. Christopher Reeve once said: “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”

Throughout the “Odyssey”, Odysseus shows many heroic actions proving that he is brave, smart, and a good leader. He has put himself in harms way before his own men, he watches over them and never leaves them behind. Going through many of the trials and difficulties. he has proven to a heroic character. One reason Odysseus is heroic is his bravery, he is brave because rather than just sending his men into danger, he goes along with them, “As for myself I took my twelve best fighters” (Homer 565).

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as an hero after the Trojan war, however, he showed signs of villainous acts throughout the story that were overshadowed by his, questionably, heroic actions. An example would be when he fought the cyclops, Polyphemus. Instead of leaving peacefully, he let his anger cloud his vision and taunted the giant by saying “O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny am I in Caveman’s hands?

What makes a person want to be a hero and do the right thing? There are many actions a person can take to be a hero. There'll always do what is right, will risk their for the greater good and will they will always put others before themselves. I try very hard to avoid the expected.” By saying this, Nevins expresses the significance of sharing stories that are unexpected and striking, key components in epic storytelling. He implies that a good epic needs to have both risk and originality, which is clearly demonstrated in Homer’s epic, the Odyssey, and attempted George Lucas’ film, Star Wars: A New Hope. Heroes, In today’s society we think of heroes as soldiers,police-officers,firefighters,doctors,old war veterans,artist,you-tubers,and even just random people are considered to be heroes in many ways to other people. Heroism is an act of great bravery and when these heroes had reacted in these heroic ways; they have sometimes felt this sudden rush of adrenaline or an sudden burst/ urge of energy or either courage. In the past, the tales or myths of heroes range from wars,war heroes victories,gods, and the journey/adventures of godlike people. Now in the Present, most of the stories we hear of these modern heroes are true. In the stories “The Good Soldiers” by David Finkel and “Odyssey” by Homer,we have read stories from both the past and present of the adventure/tale of these normal people reacting in these heroic ways but having different traits of heroism.

The most renowned heroic quality of Odysseus was his intelligence. This is what sets him apart the most from many other heroes, such as Beowulf who would have tried to battle through every obstacle that came his way. Odysseus’s cunning is the main reason why he stayed alive, why Greece finally defeated Troy with the Trojan Horse, and ultimately the reason why he managed to get home against all odds.
