What is a Hero? According to Umberto Eco (an Italian novelist) “The real hero is always a hero by mistake; He dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else.” I think this is a magnificent quote. In some ways I agree with Umberto Eco but in other I don’t. I agree with Umberto Eco on that heroes are always a hero by mistake with a few exceptions. One place where I don’t agree with Umberto Eco is that not every hero has dreams of being an honest coward, well some do but others display courage, wisdom, intelligence, bravery, and their willpower to succeed. Odysseus displays great wisdom. In the Trojan war, (which took place somewhere around the 13th century B.C.) Odysseus displayed wisdom by tricking the trojans to think that they have won with a huge victory gift (The Trojan horse) during their feist that contained a lot of soldier in it that surprised the Trojans at the least expected moment which made odysseus a hero for greatly impacting the success of the Trojan war. After the war while returning home Odysseus displayed his bravery and willpower. While Odysseus and his crew were cursed by poseidon that they would never see Ithaca, (their homeland) like the hero he is, in their desperate times he encouraged his crew to not lose hope on returning to Ithaca. Another reason that I picked Odysseus is because he does everything it takes in order to reach her goal. While returning back from the war Odysseus and his crew overcame countless obstacles and in all of them Odysseus does everything he can to ensure the safety of his crew. If he hadn’t gone to the war he wouldn’t be a hero that is what makes him a hero by
