Mass shootings have become a grim occurrence that seem to happen more frequently, no matter what repercussions they have. From the club shooting in Orlando to the violent attacks on students in schools, these events have unfortunately transpired repeatedly over the recent decades, with no end in sight. However, the recent Stoneman Douglas high school shooting may have begun the movement to change legislation so that these shootings present themselves, if at all, considerably less often. Most will say the government isn’t doing enough, but the likelihood that they will reject funding from the National Rifle Association (NRA) or amend Americans’ right to bear arms is so miniscule it is almost pointless to argue, however there may be a more plausible alternative. Congress and the President have the power to intensify the background checks and exams that citizens must undergo in order to purchase these weapons. More thorough criminal and mental examinations may prevents felons from obtaining these weapons of war, or could lead to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as depression or schizophrenia. …show more content…
The shooter, Devin Patrick Kelley, was court martialed in 2012 because he assaulted his wife and stepson before he was discharged for bad conduct in 2014. By U.S. law, this man should have have been allowed to legally purchase a weapon, but since the federal court and military courts are completely separate, his background check came up clean and he was able to purchase the weapon that he later used to slaughter 26 innocent people. How could a man that assaulted his own wife and fracture his young stepsons skull be allowed to purchase a weapon of war? The answer, inadequate background checks and a serious lack of communication between the military and federal
The media coverage of mass shooting on college campuses over the last decade has created a major debate over the permitting of guns on campus. Coverage of these events depicts walking on a college campus to that of walking in Fallujah. These news stories lead one to believe that it is not safe to be on a college campus. Your life is in danger if you want to get a higher education.
Violent crime has risen 20% over the last decade, there are may reasons why, such as the great recession, the increase of narcotic use, the break down of the family unit, or a dozen other reasons. However, the debate on how we as a society deal with violent crime is also debatable, many would say that we need more prisons, law enforcement officers, or longer prison terms. However, there are the others who are more tolerant, and would have you believe that violent crime in not on the increase, moreover, would suggest that the system is broke and the prisons should open the gates and let out all non violent offenders out. Society is violent, and this fact is evident in the amount of homicidal acts that take place every day, for example, a day
The Thurston High School shooting took place on May 21, 1998 by Kipland Kinkel at the age of 15. He killed many during the shooting, not knowing if what he did was clearly thought out. He grew up in a family that seemed to be very happy, but that was not how he was feeling inside when all he felt was sadness. He received weapons as a gift and hung around with people that had a bad influence on him. Even though he had a depressive disorder and knowing that his head wasn’t working right, it was not a good enough excuse for the crime that he committed.

Well this will be the last paper I write to you for Philosophy. For this letter I shall write to you about a social movement concerning a social problem in today's society, and by the time you read this hopefully the issue is resolved. One of the biggest social issues today is gun control, and the reason I am talking to you about this issue is because of the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. This is a huge issue because it repeatedly happens, yet nothing is done about it which is why I am passionate about this issue. I will remind you the details around the school shooting, and problems surrounding this issue. I will also talk about the non-violent resistance that is being used by the Parkland survivors to solve the problem. Since I learned a couple of ethical theories in my philosophy class, I will also discuss why and how this event/issue violates or how it’s part of an ethical life in Kant’s, Mill’s, and Aristotle’s theory.
School shootings are becoming ever more common in the United States. An attack always leads to a media frenzy featuring gun control, school safety and, more recently, the following question: Where is the urge for violence coming from? Certain people believe that television is to blame and that violent programs should be taken off the air. While there are seemingly strong reasons for this belief, the counterarguments surpass them.
Do you think that the parents of the children that start school shootings be charged? Do you think that they deserve to be punished for what their kids have done? Do you think that the parents should be hurt for something that their kids have done that they may or may not have known what the kids were doing? Lack of funding and resources, many discipline problems arise when students are disengaged and do not have support services to help them persist in their educational pursuits. Lack of textbooks, inexperienced teachers, and non-existent counseling and special education services all contribute to delinquency and high dropout rates. Alternative school environments,In some public school districts, children that have been disciplined are remanded
School shootings are some of the scariest and most stressful situations students can be in. The intruder walks in the school while everyone is in class, unnoticed, a 9mm pistol in the waist of his pants. As he walks down the hall to the gym class that is in session, he pulls out the gun… and opens fire on the innocent students. He misses the first 4 shots but lands the 5th, poor Jimmie lays on the floor breathless. Two, three, four students lay there motionless. By the time the one resource officer takes the intruder down there are already four innocent lives taken. What would have happened if the teacher of that class was allowed and required to carry a firearm? It is more than likely no students would have been harmed that day. School shootings
Great attention has been paid to the question of gun regulation in the United States. The prevalence of firearms, despite their original intention to protect citizens, has resulted in a series of mass killings by gunmen in civilian settings and has prompted a national discussion over gun laws to “limit the availability of military-style assault weapons” (Master). At the outset, it is imperative to question the validity of weapon distribution to the public. Gun ownership laws in the United States are fairly flexible compared with other countries, and recent mass shootings have raised arguments about banning private gun ownership. Regarding this issue, Rutgers University Professor Jeff McMahan has argued that American citizens’ lives are threatened
We know that people have a problem not only familiar but with friendships. We understand that people have different thoughts and that they get to do things that are not common. For example; murder, bullying and even having an attitude of mastery of the situation against the person. People who act aggressively are better off getting psychological help. However, the shooting event at school is caused by male adolescents and adults. The anguish that this causes is not small, the parents of the survivors of a shooting in the school tend to be afraid to let their son go to school and be the victim of a murderer. I think he should see more caution in school and he has alarm to detect mental. It is very difficult because you will never know the day
In 2014, there was shooting in the school where I was attended. It took a place at Lumberton High School in Lumberton, North Carolina. It was very frustrated situation for all students, staffs, and parents. Because shooting and murdering in the school is inappropriate and illegal under the law. In situation like this, it is better to take shelter, call or text 911 and turn off the lights. In addition, use any available tools to defend ourselves. Most importantly, stay calm would be the safer way to avoid from getting hurt.
The Sandy Hook Shooting case reminds us of the dangers of firearms by taking numerous young lives away. Easy access to guns brings a big issue: It means not only we but also criminals can obtain a new gun quickly. Last year, an anti-homosexual terrorist rushed into a nightclub in Orlando and shot over 100 people, and half of them died in this crime. Without a rigorous background check before a citizen gets their gun from any gun store, we can never tell whether the buyer is a citizen who's trying to protect themselves
