Hills Like White Elephants Analysis

Decent Essays

In “Hills like White Elephants”, we identify six stages of human grief pertaining to dying, and loss: denial, isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. Hemingway apparently innate understanding and dramatization, of these stages of grief.

The first thing that comes to mind during the stages of “Hill Like White Elephants” was denial. There are many significant ways that denial has been portrayed throughout the novel. When we go further into details about the title of the story, we approve an explanation as to what we should expect “HIlls”. The first thought before I began to read the story was the title. There are moments where the story as its ups, and down. This leads into a problematic figure of denial between the main antagonist Jig. While reading the novel from start to finish, Jig has been denied from the reality of life. The American became an attachment to Jigs life as her husband. Noticing further into her life I have seen a lot of negatives, mostly because The American summarizes his relationship with his wife. In the book, the girl looks off the hills of a line of hills and describes how they look like white elephants. Jig mentions how she never seen a baby like this before. Jig wants a baby. But The American does not. He expresses his dissatisfaction towards her wanting a baby. This shows the grief of tension and denial, but also an interpretation of a baby coming to life, especially from the man when he drinks the beer. This shows denial of what he is expecting that will appear in his life. I remember this exact moment when my uncle was in this same situation has the The American and drank so many beers because he was in denial. He told my aunty asking whether she was pregnant and wasn't too happy about the situation. This got me thinking of denial of The American and the women in this exact scene. On the other hand, we figure out that second, part of isolation, anger, and depression when we start to approach a much darker side of the American in the novel. Since the American is in denial, Isolation takes part of the both of them. Especially on Jig, She begins to isolate herself from The American, because he seems to not understand that fulfillment of having a newborn
