My Patient, Holden Caulfield has a family of six including his parents and himself. He has a ten year old sister Phoebe, older brother D.B. a screenwriter at Hollywood, and a younger brother known as Allie who had died of leukemia around eleven years old. Holden had attended at four schools including Pencey prep and was later expelled for failing most of his classes except for english. “This is about the fourth school I've gone to." I shook my head..."Boy!"(Salinger 9). Although Holden is 17 years old he has grey hairs growing on the sides of his head, also being 6’2 Holden appears to look more older from his actual age. He refers to adults as “phonies” and “fakers” yet ironically Holden is interested in things that adults do, but is disgusted by how they do it, “I saw a man and a woman squirting water out of their mouths at each other...You should've seen them... I think if you don't really like a girl, you shouldn't horse around with her at all, and if you do like her, then you're supposed to like her face, and if you like her face, you ought to be careful about doing crumby stuff to it, like squirting water all over it...Sex is something I just don't understand. I swear to God I don't.”(Salinger 9.14-15) Although Holden saw the couples spitting at each other, he seemed Interested but also ashamed of himself for being so. I can tell that Holden's’ main goal for going to New York was to socialize with people, to cope with him being alone. Holden tries to socialize through drinking and getting prostitutes, but in the end it only gave him doubts and depression.
