Over the course of six months, I prepared to minister to underprivileged homes in the most impoverished parts of Anchorage, Alaska. Upon arrival, time spent in trailer parks, homeless shelters, and soup kitchens consumed our schedule. Our purpose was to show those who only knew darkness, the light that was in the world. Through acts as small as a smile, children transformed before us.Not until deprived of a loving environment does its importance become recognized. Moreover, our service in Alaska provided these children with a glimpse into a world that exists beyond abusive homes. Although giving out jackets to those without at homeless shelters and feeding the hungry certainly impacted the lives of those we served, changing the futures of these
At church, in addition to my participation in the worship services, I volunteered at our church’s soup kitchen, medical camps and elementary school for underprivileged children. These experiences opened my eyes to the deprivation of love and care in the world and a dire need of God’s grace for people at large so they could receive forgiveness, healing and restoration in their lives.
It is estimated that 3.5 million people will experience homelessness during a given year. The fastest growing population experiencing homelessness is families, mostly made up of single mothers and her children. Families headed by women comprise more than half of the homeless population and 42% of this population is under the age of 5. Across the country about 2.5 million children are homeless, which is equivalent to 1 in every 30 children. The legal definition of homeless “refers to those who spend 7 consecutive nights in a car, abandoned building, public park, emergency shelter, nonresidential building, or other unconventional residence.
For a start, as my social and human capital assignment, I will be focusing on homelessness and the associations it entails. Through exploratory research, via peer reviewed journal articles and one in-person interview, I have collected data to see what social disparities and/or oppression the homeless population face from day-to-day. Furthermore, I had the pleasure of conducting my interview with a 62-year-old chronically homeless male originally from Nigeria. The location of the interview took place at a homeless shelter in Dallas, TX. Through the duration of this assignment, my participating interviewee will be identified as Bingo for confidentiality purposes. Equally important, as the interviewer – I was sensitive to the participant’s responses
My capstone project is on homelessness and preventative methods. Research on the various factors that are associated with homelessness and how to best reduce or end the homeless situation. Research shows that there are many suggestions on methods to reduce homelessness (the Homeless First Program) which have proven to reduce the numbers in various states across America (Tsemberis, Gulcur & Nakae, 2004). The homelessness problems are multifaceted with overlapping of other factors such as mental illness and risks, which include substance abuse, health disparities, and victimization, all of which have a role in the homelessness (Canton, Dominguez, Schanzer, Hasin, Shrout, Felix, McQuistion, Opler & Hsu, 2005).
The bill S1680 relates to school placement and stability for homeless children. The purpose of the bill is to amend the social service law and the education law, in relations to children that are homeless are in out of home care. The bill also creates a process in which New York State is in compliance with the federal fostering connections to the success act. It also clarifies the rights afforded to homeless children in choosing the school and school district they will attend, by changing the language to 3209 of the education law with subtitle B of title VII of the federal McKinney-Vento homeless education assistance act, 42 D.S.C.11431 et seq (NY senate). The purpose of this paper is to get a better understand and illustrate the processes
It was the summer of 2010 and I was attending an inner city missions trip in Peoria, IL. Each morning we served in an urban neighborhood volunteering at a local school or government housing. At the school, we found chipped and faded paint, walls yellowed from old age, water stains on the ceilings and walls, and lockers that were filled with graffiti. The government subsidized housing was in a horrid state of disrepair. Bullet holes riddled the doors and brick facade on the buildings. The windows and doors did not provide the safety the residents needed: ripped screens, broken glass panes and broken door locks prevailed throughout the units. The neighborhood community center had barred windows, broken concrete walks, and trash on the property. I was overwhelmed with the deterioration of the school and the neighborhood around me. I decided that summer, I would do what the neighborhood people could not do for themselves, be an active part of revitalizing broken communities through the
I have a full time position as a registered nurse in orthopedic / neurology department with Medstar Harbor Hospital. I observe the hidden poverty in one

Hesed house is a large homeless shelter located in Aurora, IL. Their mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and give people the chance of hope again. It is a national model for ending homelessness. It was a revolutionary change from the accepted “eats and sheets” to a comprehensive resource center. They offer therapy and resources for those battling addictions and mental illness and also provide employment training and medical assistance. The trained staff help identify barriers preventing their residents from regaining housing, help them develop a plan to overcome those barriers, and put that plan to action. Hesed house is close to pubic transportation and close to downtown Aurora making it an ideal location for a homeless shelter.
The program/intervention that I will create to help homeless children develop beneficial peer relationships that would reduce emotional stress would be called You + Me = 1. This program is designed with the number one priority being that homeless children are no different from regular children who are not homeless, and that they should both treat each other equally with respect. Within this intervention, there are a total of three intervention stages that are separated by age.
A nine year old homeless Filipino boy showed the world that when you want something bad enough, you find a way to do it. This boy, his mother, and siblings live in a small grocery store where the mother works. They have been living this way for five years, ever since their their small home was destroyed by a fire. The mother earns only 80 pesos per day, which isn't much, and surely not enough for a family of four.
This book pulled at my heart with both sorrow and joy. The plot of this book is a huge eye opener that needs to be more publicised. The prose was not of great depth, but the author did a wonderful job in portraying the seriousness of homeless children. Therefore, also what optimism and ambition can do to make a difference in not only someone else's life but your own. As a reader, you will learn something from this book. Rowlands did a magnificent job with the main characters like Clary and Leefe so well developed they feel like they are your close friends. I found the descriptiveness in this book spectacular. Though this book is fiction I hope that the programs for the homeless children are based on fact. Most people think of the homeless as
Paintings spread across the walls each one showing me as a different age, the latest one was of me laughing with a shadowy blob next to me, it looked liked the person had been blotted out.. Then I looked down the long hallway and saw doors, each one marked with a different date, the first one said January 14, 2010. Florida. Standing from the warm, comfortable couch I let my fingers trail across the end table that once stood in many houses but know stood in the lonely house to show people what their life was. I stopped at the door, resting my hand on the brass doorknob I pushed it open.
Kathy and Raymond have visits one day per week for two hours per day. Worker supervises these visits once per month. The first visit this worker will be supervising is on November 23, 2016. These visits occur at the Godfrey, Illinois McDonalds play place, but were taking place outside in the community prior to this when the weather is nicer. During the last supervised visit the case assistant observed Raymond reading the newspaper. The tried children interact with the case assistant; the case assistant redirects the children to interact with Kathy and Raymond. Johnathan spent most of the visit in the play place and Zoey spent most of the visit on the tablet. Raymond left the visit and returned 20 minutes later telling Kathy “they (the children)
Upon arrival, our first activity was to work in the trailer park. While these people were not homeless, they were in quite severe poverty. However, they were nothing like one may expect. One was a very friendly older woman who had worked and gone to college in her younger days but she had been abducted and hurt severely in her twenties. Even though that happen, she was cheerful and had poetic talents. Another was a family whose screen door we replaced because they could not afford a new one. The father was hard working and was made sure all of his children had an education and a roof over their head while the mother cooked and cleaned. Each was doing their part to make the best of their lives. The last was a middle aged couple who needed their trailer badly cleaned. They not only were thankful but they prayed over our group before we left. We a blessing to each of their lives but, they were to ours as
