Nature vs. Nurture
Being asked if the writer believes homosexuality is nature or nurture, biologically, all living things were meant to reproduce. In order to reproduce, opposite reproductive parts must come together. Take a look at humans: a male and female are needed in order to create a child. An egg and a sperm are the key components of reproducing. It is impossible for a male and a male, or a female and a female to have sexual intercourse and create a child. Advances in technology may allow it to happen in the future, but as for now, it is impossible. Naturally, a male and female …show more content…

They believe that someone’s sexual orientation is already determined at birth. Why do people think this way? As the writer mentioned in the first paragraph, 47% of Americans believe that homosexuality is nature. Some psychologists and scientists have tried to deny the idea that homosexuality is nurture. A neurobiologist by the name of D.F. Swaab, conducted an experiment in 1990. He took a look at a homosexual and heterosexual brain. He noticed that parts of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls sex drive and function, were double the size in the homosexual brain than in the heterosexual brain. Two other scientists by the name of Laura S. Allen and Simon LeVay, both conducted experiments on the hypothalamus. Allen discovered that parts of the hypothalamus differed in heterosexual and homosexual men. LeVay discovered that the “third interstitial notch of the anterior hypothalamus (INAH3) was two to three times smaller in homosexual men then in heterosexual men (allpsych.com).” All three scientists were able to conclude that the structure of the brain is already formed when humans are born, therefore, homosexuality is not influenced from a person’s surrounding environment, but a natural occurrence due to brain structure. Though much research is still underway, there has been no success in locating a “gay” gene, or some part of the body directly linked to homosexuality
