Proctor is a firm believer in the fact that one’s name is the only thing that remains after death, and what is done with it while living can affect one’s posterity for generations. This is the driving force behind his actions in the final act of the play. At first, he felt no shame in lying to the court about his accusation of witchcraft because he felt there was no more damage he could do to his reputation and that one more sin would not make any difference. His attitude changed when he realized his confession would mean blackening the name of those who already had died, and his sons would have to live with that mark on their names. p;    When Proctor was first faced with the decision of living with a lie or dying with the truth, he chose life.   He decided that a lie was a minute sin in comparison to voluntarily giving up the life with which God blessed him.   After signing his confession, he was notified that it would be hung above the church entrance for all to see.  Besides believing that publicity was unnecessary to a valid confession, Proctor did not want to blacken his name.   Because of committing adultery, he knew what it was like to live with a bad reputation and did not want his sons to have to live with a name marked by witchcraft.  Proctor crumbled up the paper in front of his accusers and chose death rather than advertise a lie. 

At the end of Act IV, John Proctor’s action was an act of honor. His act of honor was shown through his actions of trying to save the townspeople’s lives. The townspeople were in a situation where they needed to sit down and accept their responsibility. Proctor stated, “Beguile me not I blacken all of them when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence”. One way he did this is through sacrificing himself by taking the responsibility for something he did not even to or practice.

In Arthur Millers “The Crucible”, although John Proctor and Reverend Hale both display virtuous qualities, John proctor excels at promoting peace within Salem through his acts of justice and fortitude. Honor and pride are two words that can easily be confused, but have vastly different intentions. The definition of honor is to regard with great respect, John Proctor from the Crucible by Arthur Miller portrays when he decides to be hanged as an honest man. On the contrary the definition of pride is to feel satisfaction from one's own accomplishments which few would debate is the reason why John would hang. In the play there are three main points why what John did was honorable rather than prideful. The first point Involves the townspeople of Salem and how he wanted to pay his respects to them and prove that what was going on was a hoax. Similarly, Danforth often acts extreme in his attempts to rid witchcraft from Salem when he says, “If retaliation is your fear, know this- I [Danforth] should hang ten thousand that dares to rise against the law” (Miller 129). Danforth displays demagoguery while he explains to Reverend Hale why the executions must happen on schedule because he appeals to Hale’s passionate fear of witchcraft. Danforth’s response to Hale works in the scene to further build the audience’s perception of Danforth as irritable and urgent, yet precise, and support his determination as Deputy Governor. However, Danforth’s determination often misguides his rationality. Furthermore, Danforth supports the thematic topic of law in The Crucible and helps the reader understand the severity of justice Miller conveys throughout the play. Danforth’s role develops the play by illustrating the stubbornness of authority in Salem during the witch trials.

The definition of the word honor is high respect for someone. My definition of honor is someone who did something very important and should be respected.

Honor - we often hear this word thrown around in daily conversation. Whether talking about respected members of the community or characters in novels and films, the word honor is used repeatedly. What does honor really mean, though? The answer to that question is certainly not simple, as the definition of honor differs from person to person. This idea of the various types of honor can be shown through comparing the protagonist, John Proctor, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, to Will Kane in the movie “High Noon”, directed by Frank Zinnemann. Proctor struggles with trying to find his definition of honor as it changes from being held accountable by society’s standards to his own private moral of truth.

Honor is defined as esteem paid to worth and is associated with reverence, dignity, distinction, reputation, and a good sense of what is right, just, and true. The key part to honor is having respect for others and for yourself, the two must act together because without both one has nothing. Miller reflects this in his story of trials of townspeople suspected of witchcraft. Miller develops the theme of the importance of reputation in society through the contrast in characterization of his characters Reverend Parris and John Proctor, who are most concerned with their good name in the eyes of their community and god, respectively.

The dictionary definition of honor is high respect. I agree with that definition because when someone says they honor another, they are saying that they respect them.

The tragic events of the Salem witch trials tested the morality of several individuals, who abided to a government based on religious intolerance and limitation. Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” highlights the detrimental effects of the religious court, and the impact Puritan societal norms had on its citizens. Reverend Hale, a protagonist in the play serves as a balance between morality versus and the religious conformity that took place within society. His transformation throughout the play demonstrates his true intention in doing what is right and abiding by the correct ideals, instead of following the damaging priorities enrooted in the theocratic system. Throughout “The Crucible,” Reverend Hale transfers from adhering to a theocracy to prioritizing the true value of life, revealing his maintenance of a strong moral code.

To be honorable means to be looked up to as a great role model. To be honored is a great responsibility and commitment. People take honor very seriously. Honor is a lot like trust; it takes a long time to build and an instant to break. Webster’s dictionary says that honor is “respect that is given to someone who is admired (‘Honor - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary’),” but honor is one of those words that means something different to everyone.

Honor. Ask yourself what is honor? Most people seem to know what honor is and what it means, but when they are asked to define it, they usually can’t. Honor around the world is interpreted differently based on a person’s ideal or cultural ideology. Ranging from movies to cultures, honor has been constantly relevant and always has affected the social, political, and economic aspects of life. Honor is a word and concept that has evolved throughout time and has had profound effects on society.
