Horatio Spafford's It Is Well With My Soul

I believe the greatest tradition song is, “It Is Well with My Soul” written by Horatio Spafford in 1873. Spafford was lawyer and devout Christion. As a young businessman, he built up a successful practice in Chicago and was happily married with five children, a son and four daughters. Then in 1871 his young son died and shortly after, Spafford lost his fortune to the Great Chicago fire. He was able to rebuild however and seems to be heading uphill in his life once again. In 1873 the family planned a European vacation intended to be a time of rest for the family. The family was set to leave in November but due to last minute business demands, Spafford was delayed. He sent his family ahead on the S.S. Ville du Havre, expecting to follow behind in a few days. On November 22nd, the S.S. Ville du Havre collided with another vessel, the Loch Earn. The boat sank in a short 12 minutes, and 226 passengers died including Spafford’s four daughters. As he crossed the ocean to be with his grieving wife, it is said he wrote this hymn as the boat approached the spot where his daughters had drowned.
This hymn is something we can all understand and relate to as we experience our own loss and trial in this life. However rather than leaving us with a sense of loss, Spafford gives a reason to hope. No matter the trials of this world, our …show more content…

Because the music is newer, the likelihood that more people have heard it is great and this gives them a personal connection to the drama right away. It also allows them to focus better on the story you are trying to convey without being distracted trying to hear a new song. However, both songs are beautiful and inspired by God therefore it is my belief that either one would touch the hearts of the people who listen to it, wherever and whatever the occasion might
