In order to define herself Esperanza starts changing who she is, but after getting negative results with people around her she realizes that forcing change isn’t the way to find herself. Just like ballroom dancing, women let men take the lead and sacrifice an extra step to continue moving on the floor. Judgement is a very frequent occurrence in today’s world. It usually isn’t an encouraging judgement though. Throughout the book, The House on Mango Street, the message of judgement of others being cruel is revealed. This isn’t just in Esperanza, the main character, but everyone in the book. It is important that everyone in the book progresses and matures as a person because, it causes everyone to become more together. This all proves the claim of, The House on Mango Street portrays an aspect of maturity by showing that what people imagine about others is often not how they truly act and are as a person, how they grow as a person, and what they strive to become.

Sandra Cisneros's House on Mango Street and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God are two publications that revolve around their protagonist’s journey through maturity and self identity. Both novels focus on crucial moments of their main character’s lives and stories. However, Cisneros writes specifically on Esperanza’s, the protagonist in House on Mango Street, while Hurston focused on Janie’s, the protagonist of Their eyes were watching God, adulthood and marriages. Esperanza’s and Janie’s experiences would change their lives permanently.

“Born Bad” is the vignette I chose to address from The House on Mango Street. I didn’t find it to be significant at first because of the style of writing the author uses. I’ve not read any books using little vignettes as chapters. This style of writing makes me feel like I am reading about situations that seem random and disconnected. Esperanza was born on the evil day, what does this really have to do with her being a woman and not fitting in on Mango Street? Lucy, Rachel, and Esperanza made fun of Aunt Lupe the day she died, a sad event but what does that have do with her being a foreigner on Mango Street?

The women are forced by society to become tame, obedient wives and mothers while they had dreams they were forced to give up. A recurring image in The House On Mango Street is the window. Many women sit by the window as they watch their own lives pass them by. They are trapped and the only access they have to the world is the window they sit for hours by, watching the world they could be a part of. The women of Mango Street are imprisoned by marriage and family ties.

Esperanza dreams of a perfect home with amazing flowers and enough rooms that everyone in her family would each have one. However, she moves to the house on Mango Street, and reality is so different from what she has dreamt of. Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street tells the story of a young, teenage, Latina girl named Esperanza, living in the late twentieth century. Esperanza takes her readers through her life and adventures through each chapter of the novella where each time she learns something. She faces the troubles of racism, friendship, and strange neighborhoods and most importantly, figuring out how she wants to spend her life. Through her race and wealth, Esperanza has created her identity as a shy, poor, and ambitious person.

A book call The House on Mango Street and a movie call “Stand and Deliver,” represent the struggle of being a Hispanic in America. The House on Mango Street is similar to the movie, Stand and Deliver because the characters were judged based on where they lives, the characters have low self esteem, and the females were expected to take care of family. The House on Mango Street is also different from the movie, “Stand and Deliver,” because of the encouragement the characters received by adults, the relationships the characters build, and the different viewpoint the characters have on where they will be in the future. In my opinion, The House on Mango Street interests me more than “Stand and Deliver,” because the book leaves you wondering what is going to happen next, allows you to imagine the characters, and it has different storylines.

“The House on Mango Street” was written to explain the lives of a family living in poverty in 1984. Coming from Esperanza’s point of view, this book gave her siblings and friends an idea of who the real Esperanza was and what her priorities were. In this book, Esperanza moves from city to city, house to house, with her family hoping for a real house. When she gets to the house on Mango Street, it is not what she expects. She meets new friends and has some crazy experiences. This book has many societal standards but, the most important three are responsibility, happiness, and fitting in.
