Esperanza has a variety of female role models in her life. Many are trapped in abusive relationships, waiting for others to change their live. A female role model or friends seems to be important to Esperanza. Some of the women that are her role models are, Esperanza's great-grandmother, Marin, and Rafaela. Even though she may not have known these women very well they still impacted her life immensely , some showed the way that Esperanza did not want to live in her life to information about boys she found interesting. Esperanza does not want to be like the other women in her town, always locked inside and the only freedom they have is a small window. Her great-grandmother was a role model, she showed Esperanza the way she did not want to …show more content…
She had very few friends but one prime example is Marin. Marin lived across the street with Louie and helps take care of Louie's sisters her family lived back in Puerto Rico. The only time they saw Marin is at night when her aunt comes home from work when she sits on the porch listening to the radio. Marin works really hard so she can have money when she goes back to Puerto Rico to be with her boyfriend. She is supposed to get married to him when she goes back, Marina knows this because she has letters from him. She was the person Esperanza learned very interesting things such as “ how davey the baby's sister got pregnant, and what cream is best for taking off mustache hair” (27). Every night her aunts light goes out she lights a cigarette so the boys can see her so they can change her life. Marin is depending on a man to fall in love with her and change her life. Esperanza Really liked her and listened to the things she had to say and they affected her life, Marin was a great role model for Esperanza giving her advice on boys. Also not being like her and waiting for a man, depending on a man to change her life. Esperanza has a variety of female role models in her life. Many are trapped in abusive relationships, waiting for others to change their live. Esperanza had many struggles in her life, not growing up where and how she wanted to so role models were very important to her. These role models showed her the way she didn't
Esperanza is the protagonist of the story. She is very wealthy and gets everything she wants. She struggles through her father’s death and moving to California. Throughout the story she becomes very mature, determined, and a hard worker. She really shocked me because she was a very spoiled princess who became a very strong migrant worker. Ramona Ortega also known as Mama is Esperanza’s mother. They are always together and she helped Esperanza stay strong. Throughout the story she is very strong but becomes very ill and depressed. Miguel was Esperanza’s best friends when they were little kids. He is the child of two servants that work for the family. He wants to become a mechanic and is very determined to reach that goal. They still look after eachother, even though they aren’t very close due to their social status. In the end he is able to bring back Abuelita back from Mexico. Hortensia was a servant that took care of their family. She always looked after Esperanza and was almost like a second mother. She was a Zapotec Indian. She was Alfonso’s wife and the mother of Miguel. Alfonso was a field worker and a very close friend to Papa. He loved the land and took care of the rose garden. He is the main person who helped everyone get to California. Isabel is the daughter of Juan and Josefina. She is only 9 years old but can clean, do laundry, and change diapers. She was the one who taught Esperanza how to do housework. She becomes very close friends with Esperanza. Isabel is the only one who goes to school to learn to read, write, and speak
Esperanza and her mother made the choice to leave Mexico and go to California to work and escape Tio Luis, which I believe to be a good decision. Before going, Esperanza was spoiled, rich, and quite full of herself, living in a high social class family, and in general thought of herself better than others. At first, she was against leaving everything she knew and loved, but in the end, found herself liking California. Esperanza made new friends, in particular, Isabel, who taught her many things, even though she was younger. She taught her how to appreciate what she had, and how to get a job done. She taught her how to deal with the fact that
Self-exploration is hindered in this book and my life. I can very much identify with Esperanza perspectives on societal issues that Latin women face. A society dominated by men and women relying on them, whether it is a father, spouse or friend. Men are considered the strong reasonable as where women are weak and emotional, in turn women need men for protection. A young girl may have two story paths, one where she relies on the protection of her father while she watches her mother cater to him or two, witnesses the struggles of a single young woman and absence for a father. This book describes marriage as priority for every girl or else how could she survive; appearances and physical features are highly valued traits. This attitude is not one that Esperanza agrees with, nor do I. For example, Marin she is the girl standing on the street just “waiting for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her life.” This character implies that she does not dream of actively setting life goals for herself and working to earn them, instead she will wait until a man makes it happen for her. The ideology behind this thought being that as a woman she must thrive to be as attractive as possible to heighten her chances of marriage and acquire
First, the book starts off telling the story of how Esperanza grew up in a loving wealthy family who owned El Rancho de las Rosas in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She was surrounded by generations of family members who loved her. The family had lots of servants who worked for them during the grape harvest season and they also helped them with everything else during the off season. Esperanza was a young girl who really didn’t understand poverty and was known to have a snobbish attitude at times when she was little because of her family’s wealth. She was surrounded by families that were just as wealthy as her own so poverty was not a norm in their community. There are many examples of her snobby ways in the beginning of book like when she first boarded a train in Mexico and realizes that she and her friend definitely wouldn’t be traveling first class. Her reaction to this was basically like: "You expect me to travel coach?! Yeah right." It was evident Esperanza did not use to a present lifestyle. Esperanza father was her biggest mentor and she followed his teachings very closely. After the death of her father, it was people like Abuelita, Mama, and Miguel that help keep Esperanza diva 'tude in check which helped keep her
While Carmen helping poor people Esperanza confused because she didn’t think of poor can help each other. She was confused because the way she raised were different compared to other people. Finally, Esperanza realized that there are more profound aspects in life than being
Growing up as a child in a poor family, Esperanza Cordero was very ambitious. She was ashamed of her family and her house, and she always had dreams of one day having a beautiful house on a hill, with flowers all around. A house she wouldn't be ashamed to point to and say it was hers. She knew
Esperanza believes in feminism and women independence. In the vignette Rafaela who drinks coconut and papaya juice on Tuesday, this character is confined in her house because her husband thinks she is too beautiful to look at. “And then Rafaela who is still young but getting old from leaning out the window so much gets locked indoors
However, some may argue that Esperanza's friends are more of an important aspect of Esperanza's identity. This may be because Esperanza spends time with her friends in which they create experiences together that may develop who she grew up to be. In spite of that, Esperanza's family is who she spends the majority of her time with. She wouldn't have learned how to be a role model for others if it weren’t for her family. In addition without her family
A poignant figure in Esperanza’s life is her own grandmother. In fact, Esperanza was given her birth name after her grandmother. A touching gesture that came from good faith. A name may have some value, but for Esperanza there was a high intrinsic quality to such a simple component. Despite, never encountering her own grandmother in person, Esperanza was grateful to have fond memories by carrying her legacy through her name. Life’s motto concerns dealing with adversity and carrying the legacy of one’s family eternally. Being confident and smart was the only way to live by. No man was needed to help raise and nurture herself. Her grandmother instilled in Esperanza a sense of fortitude and independence. It is sad that a regret of Esperanza is linked to her grandmother, further illustrating the physical and mental hardships one can endure in
As a Mexican-American in the 1960’s, Esperanza faces many hardships with racism. One of the popular cultural “norms” during at this time was if you were of white ethnicity, you were thought of as superior. Many people who were white were considered a “true” American. On the other hand, if you were of black, hispanic, indian, asian or any other ethnicity, you were considered as inferior. We can see Esperanza facing these stereotypes immediately within the story. As soon as her family moves to Mango Street, one of her friends “coincidently” is moving
Esperanza didn’t look at the back of the book to see the answers, instead she added a challenge for herself. She is now portraying a huge role in the house because, of her bravery. Esperanza is becoming a young women at a fast rate. And, Esperanza is learning about tons of new things: Like how to grow food. How to help the babies and Children.

One of the biggest role models in Esperanza's life is Alicia. Alicia goes to the university Alicia is Esperanza's friend. Alicia listens to Esperanza when she tells her about her sadness about not having a home. Alicia understands what Esperanza is feeling because she is from Guadalajara. Alicia’s mother died, so she is pretty much the mother of the family. Alicia wants to do well in school because she wants to have a better life than what her mother did. She wants to be more than a wife, a mother, and the person that cooks for the family. Esperanza says, “Alicia, who inherited her mama’s rolling pin and sleepiness, is young and smart and studies for the first time at the university. Two trains and a bus,
Esperanza Cordero is a young twelve year old girl, growing up in a place, in a house, where she feels as though she does not want to be, or even belong. She often remembered her great-grandmother, from whom she had gotten her name from, as a way of relating her hopelessness to someone. Esperanza usually felt hopeless, which she found ironic considering that the name itself means hope. She reminisces about her great-grandmother from the stories she had been told, saying that she was a “horse woman,” who was free-spirited until she had gotten married and tied down. Esperanza only had this
If Esperanza’s great-grandfather would have cared enough to treat Esperanza as a person rather than a prize, he would have gotten to know her. Only then would he have known that Esperanza was like a wild horse and should not have been domesticated as so many women are. Many women were treated this way simply because most people and even many of the women believed they were meant solely to be wives and to give their husbands children. What they did not realize is that women have the right to choose what they want to do with their lives. They do not have to be mothers.
