How Can A God Of Love?

The story of Adam and Eve is simple. God created man and gave him a wife and all the animals, along with the Garden of Eden. The only rule was that they could not eat the fruit from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil or the tree of Life (Genesis 2:8-3:24). Eve, tempted by evil, ate from the tree anyway and let her husband eat from it too.

As I am siting and read thing the passages from our reading book The Norton Anthology World Literature I’m a little taken back. As a child who was raised reading the Bible at church I have learned that I never took the time to really see what it was telling me. I see in reading passage of section in of Hebrew’s Genesis 6-9 where the words say “ and to the woman, “Though God said, you shall not eat from any tree in the garden” (96). This is where the woman is talking to the serpent and she is telling him that God told her not to eat from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. In contrast, in the story of Genesis God gave man dominion over all the creatures of the Earth. (Genesis 1:28) The man to this day, hunts animals of all kinds and disrespects nature, with clear-cutting of forestry and pollution.

God’s command to “fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion” (Gen 1:28) by tilling the earth shows that man’s capacity to dominate the earth lies within himself, transforming it to his own needs.

Things change when the serpent appeared to Eve and talked her into eating from the exact tree that God commanded them to eat from. Genesis 3:6 says, “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate” (NIV). This is where the root of all human problems began. This is why all humans are born as sinners.

The book of Genesis records the creation of the world and everything in it, as well the early relationship between God and humanity. God creates man, Adam, “from the dust of the ground” (Genesis 2:7) and places him in a paradise on Earth called the garden of Eden, where he also places the tree of knowledge of good and evil. From the man, God creates a woman and tells them that they “may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil [they] shall not eat, for in the day that [they] eat of it [they] shall die (Genesis 2:16). Despite this warning, the woman, Eve, is eventually tempted to eat the fruit of the treat and convinces Adam to do the same, causing them to be cast out of the garden. Throughout the Book of Genesis, the idea of knowledge emerges throughout punishment. This theme is most apparent when Adam and Eve deceive God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. When they do this, they are immediately given the ability to discern between right and wrong. The Bible states, "The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining knowledge" (Genesis 3:6). Promptly Adam and Eve gain knowledge and realize their nakedness as deity punishment.

     Man's knowledge of good and evil gives us the power to rule the world any way we please. A God or Gods no longer have control. Once Adam, who represents the life of the human race, took a bite from the fruit of the tree of knowledge man's fate was sealed. This knowledge insured, "Man was born to rule the world" (165).

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. After having created everything on Earth, He made man. “The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”(NIV Genesis 2:15). Thus, He made Eve from the rib of Adam. God told Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge but the evil serpent, who was craftier than them, tricked Eve into eating the fruit. Eve later convinced Adam after having argued with him and he gave in. Both were punished by God for having gone against His word and would suffer the consequences of it. “So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After He drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden a cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life” (Genesis 3:23-24).

The gods soon became worried that Adam may become tired of finding the Tree of Life and instead settle for the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. This tree would not give Adam the knowledge

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Holy Bible KJV, the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1). “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: …” (Holy Bible KJV, the book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses27-28).

In the third chapter of Genesis, the story of Adam and Eve is continued. The story of Adam and Eve begins with God creating Adam from the dust and ground of the Earth. God started the Garden of Eden, and that is where He decided to put Adam. The garden had many trees in it that were full of fruit, and very pleasing to look at, with the tree of knowledge in the center. God commanded Adam to take care of the garden, and told him that he must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

God told the two of them that they could eat from whichever tree they wanted, except for the Tree of Life. Out of hundreds of trees Adam and Eve could only not eat from one. That was an easy rule to obey. God was perfection and Adam and Eve obeyed him blindly. The two did not question why they could not eat from the tree.

In six days God created the universe, the earth, and every living thing on it. This includes human beings, who were made in Gods own image. God created Adam and Eve to have an unobstructed relationship with him, He placed them in a paradise called the Garden of Eden and gave them freedom to live in friendship and trust with him. God saw that everything he created was good and He rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). God left Adam and Eve in the garden with specific instructions: they are NOT to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

In Genesis 1:28 God says, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” By giving humans dominion, God wanted them to tend to the earth and take care of it—instead of dominating it—in the same way that he tends to humans and takes care of them. This shows that God gave humans authority over other beings for the purpose of nurturing them just as God has authority over humans which he uses for the purpose of nurturing.
