These Democrats supposedly believed in the ideas of a limited central government, states’ rights, and protection of the liberty of individuals. But the votes were split and so it was up to the house of representatives to choose who would become President of the United States. Thank to a little help from Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams won the presidency of 1824.
