Most people would guess that a young teen like myself would be influenced the most by the hippest artist of today, the latest movie star, or maybe the team who designed the latest iPhone. Though they are very inspiring, I have been influenced by someone who is not in the twenty first century, yet his legacy and great contributions will go on for centuries. This individual is Charles Drew. Drew was an African American physician and medical researcher who made life changing developments in the medical field. Throughout history, there have been many black-rights activists that use their power of speaking to fight injustice and promote equality. One of those activists, who fought for equality with the power of his words, was Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was an African American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He had a vision of the roles of African Americans during and after the war to ensure they receive citizenship and freedom. Frederick Douglass faced many tribulations throughout his life and that only made his speeches for equality and justice that much more powerful because he was a victim of injustice. Douglass believed that if African Americans want to have citizenship and be seen as equals, they must prove that they deserve it. Although there were obstacles in seeing his vision implemented Douglass stood his ground and fought until his vision becomes reality.

Both Douglass and I were able to overcome our struggles, he was able to become free and became one of the most famous writers in the world. He made his mark in the world and showed people that no matter what people say or do, keep going because the struggle is worth the reward in the end. I learned how to deal with my disability, it took a lot of time and patience, but I never gave up. I am now the only person in my family who is a college graduate, something I never thought I would
I get inspiration from them because they changed the way I comprehended things about myself. African American women who embrace who they are inspired me to love my skin and my hair. When I was younger I always hated how short and curly my hair was and how brown and dark my skin is but I started to learn how to love everything about myself, I gained confidence in how I looked and I finally felt at peace. Furthermore, the anti-bullying
Racial Bias and Automatic Response in the Misidentification of WeaponsOn March 18th, 2018 Sacramento police officers shot and killed 22-year-old Stephon Clark in the backyard of his grandmother’s house after mistaking his cellphone for a gun. The fatal shooting of Stephon Clark is just one of many incidences where unarmed black men have fallen victim to implicit racial biases. When police officers are pressured to make split second decisions their unconscious biases toward black men becomes present and influences their judgement against black men whom they suspect to be armed with guns but are in fact unarmed. With today’s technological advancements and the media’s ability to reach a large population of people there is greater awareness of

If I would have to choose a historical figure that inspires me most, it would have to be Andrew Carnegie. Coming to America as a scottish immigrant and digging himself out from the bottom class. He single handedly created Carnegie Steel, which allowed America to grow upwards with his steel as its backbone, and lifeblood. In the face of impossible odds he surpassed everyone's wildest imaginations of what a human being can accomplish and achieve in their lifetime.

Frederick Douglass’s determination has inspired me to earn my BA in Social Work. His life experience has inspired me to overcome similar obstacles. Of course families are our first motivators and our first introductions to things in life. The African-American that has inspired me the most in life is my older brother Khalil Lake. At birth Khalil was born diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, and since then he has lived with the complications that come along with his diagnosis. Khalil is unable to do for himself and most of his daily needs are either done by myself or by our mom. One would think that with a diagnoses of Cerebral Palsy and being unable to walk would cause someone to have a negative view on life, but my brother is one of the happiest people I have ever known. Although he has been confided to wheelchair for his entire life, he has never let that hold him back from enjoying the life
