Many different Americans have affected our American literature, but the one who really caught my attention was Jackie Robinson. Jack “Jackie” Roosevelt Robinson born January 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia. In 1942, Robinson was drafted into the army and assigned to an all-black cavalry unit at Fort Reilly, Kansas. Robinson was discharged from the Army in 1944, Robinson began to play baseball professionally. At the time, the spot was segregated, and African-Americans and whites played in separate leagues. Jackie Robinson was the first african american to play baseball in the major leagues in 1947, signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Jackie Robinson has changed America by stepping up and becoming the first African American in history to play baseball in the major leagues.
Robinson began playing in the negro leagues, but eventually his talent was found by Branch Rickey, Rickey was the one who signed Jackie in with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1939 Robinson was named Southern California Junior College Most Valuable Baseball Player. He was also named Most Valuable Player of the International Leagues while playing for the Montreal Royals, a Brooklyn Dodger-affiliated farm team in 1946. …show more content…

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier not only for baseball but changed the culture and society of America itself. He was not only a great baseball player, he was a great man who had enormous amounts of courage and pride. He changed the history of professional athletes in america forever.
