The Great Gatsby, written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, is one of his best historical fiction novels in American culture. The story takes place in the 1920’s following World War I. The story is narrated by a young man named Nick Carraway. Through Nick’s observations, readers get to witness the need for social status, wealth, and love from the top percent in wealth. Nick is mainly with Jay Gatsby. Gatsby has wealth and power but not love. Throughout the story, he tries to find his partner, Daisy Buchanan, through parties. This drive comes from the American Dream. Gatsby and Myrtle’s corruption of the American Dream of love, fame, and fortune is ultimately ruined.
