The Industrial Revolution was a time where people started to make goods using machines instead of making handmade goods. During this time period people started moving towards cities. The Industrial Revolution had a negative impact on society. Three of these negative impacts were that people lived in tenements, working conditions were horrific, and children were forced to work. The Industrial Revolution changed the lives of thousands in a depressing way.
Tenements were apartments where families of six or more were forced into one room. These rooms were tiny. They were dark and the bathrooms were outdoors. Everything was dirty and, waste was thrown into the street. There were no windows (Entry 13). This was all these poor families
This is portraying horrendous living conditions because families of six or more had to live in a dirty, small apartment. Not all families could afford the luxurious houses outside of the town, so many children and their parents were stuck sharing the same bed. Another thing we can infer from the photograph is that the houses and city were dirty, and most likely tar filled (Document 6). CM (x2): From the photograph, you can that the children’s clothes are torn, dirty, and weary. This exhibits that not only do they have to live in the cramped tenements, they could not afford pricey habiliments.
When something new changes your life, at first you might not know if it will have a positive or negative effect. The Industrial Revolution had positive and negative effects on North America in the 1800’s. The Industrial Revolution was a time when new inventions factories started to show up around America. It started in the late 1700’s in England. Machines that wove cotton into cloth, to make easier and products cheaper.
The Industrial Revolution that took place throughout the 18th and the 19th centuries had major effects which influenced every aspect of society and life such as, urbanization, imperialism and nationalism. The industrial revolution had an unfathomable effect on shaping the modern world to what it is today. Before the revolution, society revolved around farming and agriculture. There were only two social classes, the nobility and the working class. Little did they know, that their lives were about to change dramatically and continue changing for the next generations to come.
tenement was a building in which several families rent rooms or apartments. They often had little sanitation or safety. Many immigrants lived in tenements. They were located in poor, run-down neighborhoods.
The industrial revolution was a prime time for America, although some tend to disagree, it was an age in which we as a country put one step forward on the path of progress. The industrial revolution changed us as a country socially, it also changed us economically, and although it helped in the larger spectrum in those ways, environmentally it made a few carbon footprints that can even be seen today. The Industrial revolution became a huge part of our country in the mid 1800's. Mainly after Lincoln died after the civil war is where it really picked up.
The Industrial Revolution produced a negative effect on society. The factories had bad housing in bad neighborhoods, factory owner made children work long hours without going to school and they made children do dangerous jobs. The Industrial Revolution negatively affect people.
Important moments that had an enormous impact on society included the European conquest of the new world, the Industrial Revolution, and World War I. Although all these events had a large impact in history, the Industrial Revolution, I believe, had the biggest impact on the most amount of people and drastically changed their lives the most. During the European conquest of the new world, this included the discoveries of the Americas and the Columbian exchange. When the Europeans discovered the Americas, they invaded the homeland of the natives.
The first Industrial revolution was a stepping stone to what society is now, which is why I choose this particular historical event. The first Industrial Revolution had a great impact on the growing U.S, from 1790-1840. The industrial revolution was a time of technological advances; in the way labor is produced and how it helped advance the economy and shape the society we live in now.
The social changes brought on by the technologies of the industrial revolution still affect people today. With the building of factories, people had to move to where the work was and most work was in cities. Previously most people had lived in rural communities but that changed between 1700 and 1850 as the percentage of the population living in cities grew from 17% to 50% and the influx of so many people to an urban area brought many challenges. The governments had to start planning their cities and adding infrastructure such as improved roadways, sidewalks, that were later lit by streetlamps, and proper sewers to ensure safety and health for all citizens. There was also the addition of suburbs to the outskirts of the cities and parks incorporated to allow escape from the urbanisation.
Stated by a man named Stephen Gardiner, “The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization.” The quote shows that the revolution was a stepping stone to making our civilization something great. From social to economics, then on to the political view it had its up and downs. From having the cruel child labor in factories. To inventions like the telephone that we still have today.
The Industrial Revolution has had a major effect on society, there were several major inventions during the period of time between approximately 1750 - 1901. Some of the inventions had a bigger effect on society than others. These included the steam engine, the telephone, The model T Ford car and the vaccination. These inventions changed the way society worked because they changed the people communicate, traveled, recuperated after being ill and the way they did business. The invention that I will mainly be looking at is The Telephone and the effect it had then and now.
The industrial revolution was a pivotal point in European history that shaped not only their work force but the entire worlds as well. This mechanical metamorphosis recreated the concepts of labor in European society as well as the very idea of what work is and what it should be. The revolution was also a transitional period in European history for England itself, changing the very nature of man’s perception of employment. Transition case many areas of European society to change such as; the transition from domestic farm labor to the factory systems, the evolution of the working class and its members, and the change and effects if family life in Europe. So many different changes came about because of this revolution but its transitional effect
The industrial revolution shifted the energy resources, such as animal power and running water to fossil fuels. The increased use of fossil fuels and machines changed society. During this time the large scale production of goods in factories became less expensive than local production and machinery reduced the amount of land and human labor needed for farming. As fewer people grew their own food the population in suburban areas began to increase and fossil fuels and motorized vehicles allowed goods to be transported cheaply across greater distances.
The Industrial Revolution had many positive and negative impacts on society. The positive include cheaper clothes, more job opportunities, and improvement in transportation. And the negative would include exploitation of women and children, workers work long hours and environmental damages. These are just a few that I believe had an impact on the Industrial Revolution.
The lowborn workers toiled away for hours in physically exhausting jobs only to afford apartments that were sterile and cold. “There were some nine cots in the place . . . he was sick of the bareness and privation connected with his venture” (Dreiser, 304). The pay affected the men and woman’s own mode of life. They were forced to share living spaces with other families and more often than naught, had to bunk with complete strangers. The very comforts associated with a home, such as wood and furniture, were often too large of an expense. Even with Governmental/ Charity handouts the citizens had no money in which they could afford better living conditions. The rooms they were given to stay in were cold and sterile, and they were not guaranteed a place to stay every night.
