In history there have been numerous events and leaders that have impacted the world. The renaissance brought the “rebirth” of a new world with the help of humanism. Although the renaissance brought new political reform, arts, ideas and an age of exploration. There have been many influential explorers through time but today we are focusing on Henry the Navigator. Henry the navigator was not only a prince but a hero to Portugal who created a school of navigation and supported voyages that aroused Portugal’s empire.
During the age of discovery Prince Henry funded many voyages. A prince who was born 1394 in Portugal and son of King John, left an everlasting effect of Portugal. Even though Henry was not an educated navigator he funded a number of explorations that founded some of the country’s first colonies. Over the years Henry became enchanted by Africa, its resources (gold) and hoped to share Christianity among the people there. At the beginning of the voyages Europeans had not discovered or had any knowledge of anything past the west coast of Africa. Henry ordered his sailors to move beyond that point. Curiosity pushed explorers farther than they had ever been in centuries before. By 1436 they reached Rio de Oro but didn’t end there.

His purpose was to conquer the Muslims, to expand Christianity religion and establish more efficient trade routes. Devoting his life to studying new places, mapping and studying the sea Henry accomplished unbelievable things. New lands expanded Portugal. Faster stronger ships called caravels were created to benefit expeditions. His voyages lead the way for more efficient trade routes. The Muslims controlled much of the major sea routes so Henry in attempt bypass Muslim controlled trade routes and taxes in the Middle East and Eastern Asia he set voyages to find new
Just before Columbus set off to the America in the late fifteenth century, Portuguese explorers pushed their way south along the Atlantic coast of Africa. The reached the cape of Good Hope in 1487. The southern tip of Africa became of interest to the Europeans, as the commerce between Europe and Asia increased.
Over thousands of years there have been many people who have modernized the world and shaped it to be the way it is today. One of the people who has had a huge impact on this world is Christopher Columbus. He was an Italian explorer and the founder of the new world. His goal was to find a passage to India but instead found where the modern days bahamas are and opened the doors for European exploration. Affected by this exploration was global population, global economy, political reign, and advancements in technology. This new era is called the age of exploration.
The Portuguese Empire lasted over six centuries, beginning in 1415, with the conquest of Ceuta, a Moroccan port on the straits of Gibraltar, and one of Europe’s first attempt at colonization in Africa. This move was orchestrated by Prince Henry, who was known as ‘the Navigator’. It was because of Prince Henry that Portugal became an imperialist country, he studied navigation, and made improvements on inventions like the astrolabe and compass, his goal was to make Portugal the most powerful sea power in the world. Prince Henry sponsored many naval explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias (who rounded the tip of Cape Hope in 1488) and Vasco de Gama. Three years after Ceuta, a group of uninhabited islands were found off the coast of Portugal, they were named the Madeiras, and almost immediately people began to settle there, they as well as the Azores islands (another set of uninhabited islands found in 1445) remain an autonomous part of Portugal today.
Columbus , Cortez and Magellan accomplishes feats of adventure from the 1400s to the 1700s around the continents and countries , the impact of the european exploration was diseases , animals and food.
On March 4th 1394 Henry the Navigator was born into Portuguese royalty. Henry, the third son of King John I and Phillipa of Lancaster, grew up in the royal family and he received a great education and became inspired by astrological literature and military campaigns. He also witnessed his father's adventure on many conquests. Henry and his brothers hoped that one day, they too could voyage over the oceans and conquer new land. However, while Henry wanted to find and take over new lands, he never went on a journey himself. Henry was a great sponsor and advocate of trips along the West african coast and Madeira Islands. While Henry may never have journied, he did manage to begin the new era of exploration. Henry helped to inspire a love of travel and curiosity as well as a growing desire for worldly pleasures as he usually exploited natural resources for personal benefit. Beginning the Age of Exploration depended on Henry the Navigator because, he sponsored voyages, founded the School of Navigation, and initiated foreign trade.
The Renaissance and subsequent scientific revolution in the west led to a drastic change in the philosophical assumptions that underpin the way we perceive the world. In short, the vertical order of being collapsed, a strict dichotomy between the observer the observed came into play, and the universe ceased to be seen as a symbol—eventually causing the divine that was symbolized to disappear from public consciousness. These consequences, however, was not inevitable. Muslim civilization had much of the same data and made many of the same scientific conclusions as western civilization without falling into the trap of abounding the spiritual nature of being. A large part of this difference came from the decline of mysticism in western Christianity by the time of the Renaissance.
Many say that the renaissance changed the way men view the world. Did it really change how men viewed the world? Some people view them self as the center of the world, also started to view themselves as something in scientist eye. The renaissance is to rebirth or rebuild a nation. Did you know that the Detroit renaissance center was to show how Detroit rebuilt its city? The renaissance is a good way of showing how people lived in the past compared to the present.
Renaissance changed the man’s view of the world because Renaissance means rebirth. So it changed the way people look at art, literature, and science. It was a very powerful change and went on for centuries. One of the best examples from the Renaissance is Leonardo DA Vinci because of all is successful things he did.
In 1415, Henry, his father and his brothers who were older then him led a attack on Ceuta, Morocco that was along the Strait of Gibraltar. When the attack was successful this made Portugal control it. Which made Prince Henry more curious about Africa and he can not ask anybody because the people of Portugal know little abut Africa. He also wanted to learn about the Muslims who lived in Africa so that Portugal can conquer them to spread the Christian
Prince Henry the navigator was born March 4, 1394 in Porto, portugal. The was a sailor and navigator, he also sponsored a great deal or exploration along the west coast of Africa. Henry began exploring the African coast to find the source of the African gold trade. Portuguese ships were big and slow, so henry commissioned the invention of a new lighter ship. It was called the cararel that was fast and could sail into the wind. About 1418 Prince Henry started the first day of school for oceanic navigation along with an astronomical.
It is evident that the Portuguese would have made it to the African West coast safely but even though they were a maritime people something must had motivated them other than the desire to expand, to set sail and travel to the African coast and Atlantic islands. This motivation was economic, the Portuguese would of made these ventures to gain wealth for themselves and they must have known that taking such trips would surly bring wealth if not they probably wouldn’t
The 15th and 16th century was a magnificent time for Europe. New ships were being created, maps were being updated, and new navigational tools were invented. All of this was able to happen due to Vasco da Gama who was the first person to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, Christopher Columbus who discovered the “New World,” and Ferdinand Magellan who circumnavigated the globe.
To the surprise of these traders, they discovered that gold was used by the indigenous for barter trade. In their quest to spread Christianity, these first missionaries erected wooden crosses wherever they went. In responding to Prince Henry the navigator for a naval expeditions to expand Portugal’s fortunes, their interest shifted to finding out more about the mineral and thereby relegating Christianity. Another motive of the early Portuguese was to control and direct trade in West Africa, mostly taking it away from the influence of the Muslim merchants of the Levant and North Africa. As a means to prevent Muslim trade to expand, Portugal as a way of fostering the creation of African Christians, considered it important by bringing profit
The Renaissance played an important role in shaping European life by causing change in the cities, guilds, and life of the upper class. Throughout the Renaissance there was a recovery of culture, specifically of Rome and Greek culture. It was these recovered ideas that were ultimately incorporated into buildings, art and government of Europe.
Stemming from the Iberian Peninsula, the Age of Exploration began extending the influence of European nations to every corner of the globe. Driven to establish a flourishing empire through means of expanded commerce, Spain quickly followed Portuguese methodology and developed a world class fleet. Upon completion of necessary upgrading to vessels, King Ferdinand II sent forth explorer, Christopher Columbus, indoctrinated with national creed “God, Gold, and Glory”. In August 1492, Columbus set sail for a more direct and expeditious trade route with Asia. However, after first landfall in the West Indies, his intent shifted stating, “But in truth, should I meet with gold or spices in great quantity, I shall remain till I collect as much as possible, and for this purpose I am proceeding solely in quest of them.”
