Charles Darwin, the naturalist, once wrote, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” In other words, the most adaptable species prevails. In “Ru” Kim Thuy depicts this idea through Nguyen An Tinh, the main character. Nguyen An Tinh survived because she was the most responsive to the changes in her life. Although she was never near death, she suffered immensely. Fear negates jubilance, but improves chances of survival; endorsement from family alleviates sorrow with pleasure; adaption is not facile, nor is easy. Fear is the inevitable result of suffering leading one to desolation which lacks happiness.

Ancient China has a very complex background that has been formed over hundreds of years. Over the years China has had many rulers and they have all ruled in different ways. In Ancient China through all the years they had the same problem. Their problem was that the nomads to their north kept invading them and they couldn't stop them because the nomads had horses. China tried many different strategies to protect themselves: from paying tribute to the northerners, to building walls, or trading over thousands of miles to obtain methods of fighting back, none of these strategies had long term success.
The common people of China are anything but common, they just knew how to flourish in an era where the upper class usually lead the way, however, the Chinese during the Han, Tang, and Song Dynasties figured out how to outwit the upper class in a distinguished way.
