Have you ever read a book with a lot of courage in it? Many of the books I read this year had aspects of courage. In these next few paragraphs, I will be talking about courage expressed in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, To Kill a Mockingbird, Holocaust books, and The Merchant of Venice. In the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior shows lots of courage throughout the book. “Rowdy, I am going to Reardan tomorrow.” (51, Alexie) When Junior stands up to everyone, including his friend, and decides to go to Reardan, he shows courage to make a change in what used to be just to stay in one place and try not to make a difference. “‘You can’t stop me. I’ve been kicking your ass for fourteen years.’ Rowdy said. ‘Not tonight,’ I said. ‘Tonight’s my night.’” (191, Alexie) In this statement, Rowdy is guarding Junior in the basketball game and Junior was thinking about not playing earlier but chose to at the end and went up against Rowdy, his best friend. After the dance, Junior was planning on walking home, but Penelope asked him if he was poor, so Junior told the truth. Penelope was surprised …show more content…
“Hey, Mr. Cunningham. How’s your entailment gettin’ along?” (155, Lee) In this quote, Scout decides to talk to Mr. Cunningham even though they are in obvious danger and wants to ask about his son and says how good he is doing. If she didn’t show courage, this could have went a different direction. “I wanted you to see what real courage is,’ Atticus said. ‘Instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.’” (112, Lee) In this quote, Atticus is explaining what courage really is to Scout and Jem and what it means to have courage. Scout also shows courage when she first meets Boo Radley by talking to him and walking him home. If she didn’t know it was him, she would probably do nothing different but to welcome him into their
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 116). This quote from the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee helps define what real courage is and how it should be taught. Throughout this book many characters had the right mind set when it came to courageous deeds.
The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. To Kill A Mockingbird is set in Macomb County is the 1930´s. The book in narrated by scout, but some other major characters include Atticus and ¨boo¨. Across this book, these three characters find their own meaning of courage. As a reader, we get to see what they do to show courage, and the sacrifices they make to get there. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird courage is shown as doing something even when consequences await. In To Kill A Mockingbird Scout, Atticus, and ¨Boo¨ Radley display courage.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view, until you climb into their skin and walk around in it.” Atticus stated on page 30 of To Kill a Mockingbird. This shows that Atticus Finch is very courageous when it comes to things because this quote was about the Cunningham’s, very poor people who never took anything they could not pay back, and Atticus knew that and so he gave the Cunningham’s something that he knew they would be able to pay back, this shows courage because Atticus knows they don’t have a lot but he still took what they did have. Atticus also shows courage when he allows Scout to talk to Mr.Cunningham even though he knows it is probably not the best idea because it
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage is displayed in many different forms. Most people think of courage as fighting in a war and risking your life. However, courage can mean many different things, as it does in this award winning novel. There is a point in the book where Atticus is talking to Jem about courage. Atticus starts saying that he wants his son “to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.”[pg.149]. Atticus is trying to tell Jem that there are many different kinds of courage. Courage is shown in this novel as doing something you would rather not do or something that takes risk. Scout had to show courage on her first day of school, Jem had to show courage to go get his pants from the fence when he was running from the Radley house, and there are many more instances.
In literature themes of courage are very often seen in the story’s main character. However, some pieces are an exception. Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” demonstrates that every individual has the capability of being courageous. First, marginalized citizens are capable of being selfless in order to help a community that may not treat them equally. Next, The youth of a community are represented as children being courageous when adults put them in situations requiring them to be. Finally, courage is also displayed an adherent for a marginalized group stands in the face of racism, opposing societal norm. All these types of characters that Harper Lee has created demonstrate one thing: Courage is a virtue which everyone can exhibit when fear forces him or her to act.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”
In the the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Scout learns that there are many different kinds of courage. There are many displays of courage, by many characters of the book, subtle though they are. Many you probably wouldn’t think twice about.

However, what motivates him to do so is not to be ‘courageous’, but rather by the importance he places on his own morals. Hence Atticus’ actions are driven by his need to stay true to himself and his morals. This can be seen through Atticus’ conversations with Scout about “people’s consciences not abiding by majority rule” and her being “everybody less one”, when the crowd went against what was right. It took courage for Atticus to stand up against the town’s prejudices in defending a negro, but his motivation for doing so was to uphold what he stood for, something that came naturally to Atticus. It was his moral compass that motivated him to take action, not courage
Every so often in life, you find yourself stuck between a rock and a hard place. Bravery in these types of situations is absolutely critical. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout, Jem, and Dill encounter one of these situations, when Tom Robinson is being moved to the county jail. Several men were planning to take care of Mr. Robinson without due process of law, who, in their mind, was already guilty. Atticus caught wind of this plan and went to the jail to defend Mr. Robinson himself, as he was not about to let an innocent person be thrown to the dogs. Jem originally did not know what was going on, and wondered why Atticus would leave the house so late. Jem decided to sneak out and follow him, Scout and Dill quickly following suit. Once they arrived to the county jail, they encountered Atticus being faced by a group of men, all smelling of alcohol. Before any type of fight could break out, Scout pushed her way out of her hiding space. The boldness of her move showed extreme bravery. She had no idea what she would be leaping into.
Dubose show many different aspects about courage throughout the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Courage is not always trying and succeeding, it can be trial and error too. When someone tries he or she is standing up for what they think is right. The next time there is an opportunity to stand up for what is right, do not think about succeeding or failing, think about giving it a
“Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let the fear stop you.”-Bethany Hamilton. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem learns the true meaning of courage. One day Jem meets Dill and they begin to obsess over their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley. They often taunt and play games mocking Boo. One day when Dill dares Jem to touch the Radley Place, Jem ends up losing his pants. Jem’s father, Atticus, takes a case defending a Negro, and much of the town shames him for it. One neighbor, Mrs. Dubose makes many rude comments toward Atticus, causing Jem to dislike her. Although Jem dislikes her, Atticus says she is the bravest woman he ever knew. Atticus defines brave as, “Real courage… It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what”(149). To Kill A Mockingbird suggests that real courage is doing the right thing no matter what the consequences. Jem shows fake courage when he touches the Radley Place, but he begins to be brave when he goes to retrieve his pants. Jem learns to be brave from Mrs. Dubose, and he finally applies this lesson when he defies Atticus.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Merchant of Venice, and the Holocaust unit all have examples of courage.
Courage is about people confronting situations or accepting challenges in spite of the potential failure. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and bravery. This idea of courage is a prominent theme in Harper Lee’s in To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel deals with two children- -Jem and Scout-- coming of age in a racist environment. Their father Atticus defends a local African American. All characters learn lessons about courage and racism. In this in mind, it is important to examine how courage is examined through the characters of Jem, Atticus, Boo.
Courage can lead to change in individuals. That person could do something differently after courage changes them in a way. This happens in two books called “The Giver” and “Treasure Island.”
