It is seen throughout human likeness to hide one’s true intentions and cover it with a mask, painted with an innocent smile. Similarly, many characters in Macbeth wear an invisible mask, which shields others from knowing their true motives. Written in 1606 by the renowned William Shakespeare, Macbeth is the story of a tragic hero named Macbeth who although is renowned as a noble man, falls into his own downfall when he rushes to fulfill his prophecies according to which he will become king. His behaviour led him to make terrible mistakes along the way, forcing him to forge stories that blind his kingdom of their reality. The actions he makes based on these intentions result in the death of Banquo and eventually Macbeth’s insanity due to his transgressions. After Duncan’s murder in act two, Macbeth though in a position of great authority, fears being exposed by the noblemen around him. Banquo swears to find the man behind the king’s death saying, “In the great hand of God I stand, and thence against the undivulg’d pretence I fight of treasonous malice” (2.3.126-128). From there onwards, Lady Macbeth’s mental health began to deteriorate as she feels responsible for the deaths of Banquo and Macduff’s family. While a doctor comes to observe Lady Macbeth’s health she says, “Here’s the smell of blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand…”, (5.1.34). In her final moments, while her mental health is waning, she pleads guilty to all the murders that had been recently witnessed, unaware of the doctor’s presence. She says that all the perfumes of Arabia cannot ‘sweeten’ her sins, which is ironic as she had previously told Macbeth that a little water, would cleanse him of his murder of the king.
