The novel Tangerine is filled to the brim with exciting action scenes, coming of age moments, and flashbacks revealing the strange past of Paul Fisher. In Tangerine, Paul and his family (Mr. and Mrs. Fisher and Erik) relocate to a development called Lake Windsor Downs in Tangerine, Florida. Many conflicts arise, deaths, robberies, and possible murders being some. Old conflicts that Paul have been struggling with also turn up. One of them being how Paul really got his coke bottle glasses. Maybe in Tangerine, he will finally find the reason. In this novel, Tangerine, Edward Bloor expertly uses symbolism and flashbacks to drive the theme of growth and change.

On page 168, Paul remembers this memory in a flashback. “Suddenly I felt the hot breath of a predator on my neck. I screamed in terror. Erik laughed and ran over to Mom and Dad. He had snuck up on me from behind, from somewhere back around ten o’clock.” For the most of Paul’s life, he has been frightened of Erik. Some situations are when his science group came over to his house, then Paul heard Arthur’s truck. Paul was terrified and was frozen with fear. Or in another flashback where Paul believed that Erik was trying to kill him. However, Paul isn’t fearful anymore. (as shown on page 262.) On page 262, Erik and Arthur were threatening Paul, but miraculously Paul wasn’t frightened as usual. Instead, he spoke up for himself. He also confronted Arthur and Erik, saying that he saw Arthur murder Luis. On page 263-264 Paul remembered something from his past. “And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them . They left me screaming and rolling around on the floor of the garage. Mom came and tried to drag me over to the hose to rinse out my eyes, but I fought like a wildcat. She managed to push me into the backseat of the car and drive me to the hospital.” This experience results in Paul being too scared to say anything about Erik. However, after everything that’s happened in Tangerine, Paul finally has the courage to expose the truth. (As seen on page 284, when Paul tells the officer the
Erik and Paul's relationship isn’t a great one. The relationship is mostly bad it comes from Erik. Erik bullies his brother while his parents do nothing. “And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint on them.” I The actions of
Later on, Erik makes the choice to order Arthur to hit Luis in the head with a blackjack. Because of Erik’s choice, Paul feels guilty about not speaking up about Luis’s death. On page 284 Paul says,”’The weapon that he used to kill Luis Cruz was a blackjack. I saw-I heard Erik Fisher tell him to do it.’” When Luis dies, Paul is too scared of Erik to tell the truth about Luis’s death. He eventually overcomes his fear and speaks up about Luis’s death. Paul looked up to Luis as a role model. If Erik hadn’t made that choice, Paul never would’ve learned to speak
One decision that caused Paul to be less afraid of Erik is on pages 262-263. On these pages the author says, “He turned and threw the bat into the Land Cruiser. He got in, and Arthur got in, and they drove quickly away.” (Pg 262-263) This makes Paul less afraid of him because he was able to stand up to Erik and Arthur alone without getting hurt by either one of them. This also caused Paul not to be afraid of Erik because it proved to Paul that Erik wasn't so perfect and put together as he thought. Another reason why Paul is not afraid of Erik at the end of the book is on page 284. On page 284 the author states that, “I stood up straight and faced them all, like I had seen Luis do. “I saw- I heard Erik Fisher tell him to do it.”” (Pg. 284) This shows that Paul is less afraid of Erik because he was willing to expose Erik in front of everyone, and tell the complete truth without being afraid that Erik would hurt him in anyway. Erik Fisher causes Paul Fisher to be less afraid of him by losing control and not denying the truth about the bad things he had
There are many moments of character development for Paul in the novel Tangerine. Paul grows physically and mentally throughout

In conclusion, the choices made by the fisher family in Tangerine affected Paul greatly by making him feel fear, unimportant and gave him a low self
“I saw you face down Erik and those other guys, and I also saw Arthur Bauer Hit you with a blackjack’’, Page 227. Afterward, Paul reveals to the police that Erik and Arthur were involved in the death of Luis Cruz. On page 211 of Tangerine it states, “Arthur reached Luis, turned, and whipped the blackjack around with a loud whack against the side of Luis’s head.” Paul’s close friend Luis was smacked across the head with a blackjack by Erik and this caused Luis to have an aneurysm. Luis was smacked on the head because Erik had hit Tino, Luis’ brother in the face with a blackjack, so Luis got involved, and confronted Erik and Arthur. Paul is devastated because the aneurysm sadly caused Luis’ death. Luis was very helpful to Paul and seeing him dead made Paul despondent. Also pages 244-245 states, “Luis Cruz is dead...I raised my hand and got Ms. Polland’s attention. I said, “I gotta go. I’m sick again.” Luis’ death made Paul sick to his stomach because first, they were close friends because he was kind of like an older brother to Paul. Also, Paul knows that Arthur and Erik are involved in the
Because of Eric’s decisions Paul is now not afraid to speak up. And he will now know to speak up when there is a problem. She heard none of this.”(P. 52). Paul sees how Erik really acts when his parents aren’t around. He sees that Erik is like a scam-artist who lies about what they do to get people to like them or think greatly of them. In this quote, Paul sees how Luis tries to defend Tino after the incident with Erik and what happens afterwards: “Arthur reached Luis, turned, and whipped the blackjack with a loud whack against the side of Luis’s head. Luis’s arms shot up to cover his head as he staggered to the right and fell on one knee… ‘Arthur takes care of all my light work.’ Erik and the rest of them caught up with Arthur at the gate.”(P. 211-212). Erik and Paul’s parents think that Arthur is a

On how Paulhe acts, who his friends are, and his confidence. Erik personality and behavior takes down Paul’s confidence and that shown in the book Tangerine very well. So well, that we have to talk about Paul’s confidence. Paul’s confidence was terrible in the beginning of the book. He was a coward, troubled, and anxious little boy.
