How Does Elizabeth Proctor Create Tension In The Crucible

The Crucible is a historical play by Arthur Miller, and is set in the town of Salem during the late 1690s. The main characters are John Proctor, the protagonist, and Abigail Williams, the antagonist. The conflict occurs when Abigail falsely accuses others of witchcraft. This leads to hysteria in the town, with people turning in innocent people for witchcraft. Many people including John and Elizabeth Proctor are arrested and put on trial, despite their innocence. John Proctor is sentenced to death after refusing to denounce his friends as witches, forgiven by Elizabeth for his affair with Abigail, and restores his reputation of being a good man. Concerned that word about her affair will spread throughout the village, Abigail begins to lie and point fingers at people for witchcraft, hoping it can draw the people’s focus away from her. After she and the girls were discovered in the forest by Reverend Parris, she lies or purposely forgets to mention to that she had drank a potion that would kill John Proctor’s wife. The only thing she said to him was: “We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there's the whole of it.” (Miller 9). In another situation where Abigail's lying is shown again, Parris is asking why she was fired from her previous job as Elizabeth Proctor’s servant, and her excuse is: “She hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. It's a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such woman!” (Miller 11). Clearly this is false because Elizabeth didn't fire Abigail just out of coldness, though that was part of it, she fired her because she found that Abigail was having an affair with her husband, John. These lies led to unnecessary problems and prove Abigail is a self centered person because she only wants what's best for herself.

One of the characters in the play is Elizabeth Proctor. She is a static character because she undergoes very little changes throughout the play. One accuser that is the reason this all started was Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams is to blame because she possesses the evil qualities of being remorselessness, jealous, and also having the quality of vengefulness. These qualities that Abigail have are direct contributions to the murder of many people who were unjustly hanged to death.

From 1692 to 1693 a series of terrible trials occurred, These trials consisted of accusations of witchcraft. Today, these trials are known as the Salem Witch Trials. As a result of these trials, 19 citizens, 14 women, 5 men, and even one dog were put to death. The play, The Crucible, was written by Arthur Miller in 1952. In this play the characters have so many different characteristics from each other. Abigail is seen as a bad person while John Proctor is seen as the good and honest character; even though he made some bad decisions.Throughout the play the two characters Abigail and John Proctor show many differences in the characteristics of: lying/truthfulness, self-sacrifice/selfishness, and fear/courage.

He wrote this play for the purpose of displaying communism and showing the red scare that was happening to his community in the 1950s. He wanted to show the similarities of the two time periods. He wanted to show that what happened in the salem trials was happening with the communist trials. He took historical accounts from Salem Massachusetts and created characters on what he read. Two characters he wrote about were sweet Mary and a manipulative girl named Abby. Although Mary Warren and Abby in this play, seem different, Mary is a meek and quiet girl while Abigail Williams is an aggressive girl who likes to get her way,they both play a part in why the salem witch trials happened in The Crucible.

Abigail’s readiness to abandon Puritan social restrictions sets her apart from the other characters, and eventually leads to her downfall. Abigail Williams uses manipulation and cruelty to create an atmosphere of terror and intimidation in her town. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams leads the hysteria in Salem by taking extreme measures to succeed in attaining John Proctor's love.

In the end of the play, the character, John Proctor, chooses to stop fighting the insane witch trials and he takes up his death sentence. He made this final choice to be truthful and die for a false accusation. This is hard to believe based on the character we learn about throughout the play, the man who has stood up the entire time for the right and just has made his final choice to not lie for his life but to die for his own peace. Throughout the play, there is tension between Proctor and most of the other characters. John has tension with his own wife because of his guilt for betraying her and having an affair with Abigail.

Elizabeth is an honest and forgiving women. She knows the her husband had committed adultery with Abigail and has her suspicions but, instead of asking John about it she said things like “You come so late I thought you’d gone to Salem”(pg.488) which implies that he would be going to Salem to meet Abigail but, Proctor caught on. She is different from other wives instead of bombarding him with questions and being angered and mad with him she is calm and collected about the whole situation. Arthur Miller creates many unforgettable characters in his play, The Crucible, to depict the historical events of the Salem witch trials. Although there are many other influential characters in the town of Salem that cause major events to happen during the trials and are eventually subject to their consequences, two women were most prominent. As a young, manipulative, vengeful, jealous, and selfish liar, Abigail Williams feels that she has superiority over everyone and uses this mindset to accomplish her malicious intentions. Elizabeth Proctor portrays a virtuous, selfless, and forgiving housewife who can often be cold towards people but still has the courage to face the people after finding out about her husband, John Proctor’s, sin of committing adultery. Despite the numerous hardships they overcome throughout the play, both women continue to prove their determination towards achieving their respective goals. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller shows the true dedication of Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor through their love for John Proctor, realization of their role in the witch trials, and their influence on their surroundings.

Abigail Williams, Betty, her cousin, and Tituba the slave are caught dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris, Betty’s father and Abigail’s uncle. Betty freaks out and ends up in a coma like state and rumors began to spread around town stating that it is witchcraft, starting the Salem Witch Trials. Paris questions Abigail about it but she only admits that they were dancing.
