Rules and order are the building blocks of any society. In the allegorical novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding the author, uses the conch as a symbol for rules and order. An allegory is any object or idea that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. Lord of the Flies, is about English school boys who have to survive on an island with no inhabitants, after a plane crash. The boys are forced to survive on the island with no adult supervision. The conch is used by the boys as a symbol of leadership in their fabricated civilization. As the story progresses, the conch loses it authority and the band of boys begins to separate.
In Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the conch has hidden meanings. There are so many others that could be talked about, but there is not enough time in this essay. I chose three that are major here they are Power, authority, and worthless. These are only a few examples of the conch.
Lord of the Flies island is similar to our society in many ways. There are certain objects that link the island and our society. Firstly William Golding portrays the conch as a symbol for power, order and authority. This is because whoever holds it becomes the
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel where man is fending for survival. Boys are aground on an island at the time of a war. The two main characters Jack and Ralph, who represent civilisation and barbarism, have a strong conflict. This has an effect on the rest of the boys throughout the book. All of the boys slowly turn into savages further into the story. Close to the end of the book Jack states “And the conch doesn’t count at this end of the island.” pg. 186 When Jack says this, it represents that he does not want rules. Jack is a savage and he refuses to be civil and organized. In the novel, The lord of the Flies, by William Golding the conflict man vs. society, man vs. man, and man vs. nature illustrate humanity.
The conch in Golding's’ novel Lord of the Flies symbolized civilization and order. When Ralph is first introducing the conch to the boys and explaining to the boys that they must not talk over the person with the conch. The conch made it so not everyone was talking all at once. This helped with establishing order because ideas for advancements in their community and on how to survive on their own were made. When everyone was talking at once, Piggy held the conch up and they quieted down. “Then Piggy was standing cradling the great cream shell and the shouting died down”(33). At this point in the book order is installed and there is peace. Everyone is respected and has a chance to speak their mind; even Piggy who throughout the book is treated
The novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding is a very iconic book in my opinion. This novel consists mostly of symbolism. Lord of the Flies talked about the relationship of teenage boys who survived a plane crash together. The boys are all on their own and struggling. They encounter many incidences that comply symbolism. A couple of the acts of symbolism are the beast the boys kept imagining, Piggy’s glasses, and the conch. The boys are all afraid of the beast, Piggy’s glasses demonstrate the fact that he saw everything more clear then the boys and how he started the fire. Lastly, the last of the most important symbolisms in the novel is the conch, showing the civilization and order.
In Conclusion, the conch, the fire, and piggy’s glasses are all examples of allegory in the novel lord of the flies by William Golding. The conch in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding represents power, responsibility and leadership. When the boys hold meetings around the camp fire, only the speaker who is holding the conch may address the crowd.. At times the conch was disobeyed, you can see that in Chapter 1 the conch was powerful but later on in the book some of the boys started to talk over it. The boys in the novel start to develop a relationship with the conch which states Golding’s theme that humans, when
The classic novel Lord of The Flies by William Golding displays two contrasting concepts that are raised in Nietzsche's quote: individuality and conformity. Set in the era of the Second World War, a group of young boys become stranded on an island and are forced to adapt to the new environment. Immediately, a tribe was formed, its members appointed different positions in a social hierarchy. Golding’s use of symbolism through different characters, places and objects throughout the book makes small subjects have a deeper meaning than expected. The three main characters situated at the top of the hierarchy represent different roles and qualities. Ralph as the chief, shows leadership and direction, whilst Jack displays jealousy and savagery and Piggy the wise and alert. Another subtle symbol is the conch, which was the only object on the island that kept the boys in a civil manner. Whoever held the conch possessed power and authority,"That's what this shell's called. I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." The order, rules and organisation within the clan are also represented through the conch, used to summon the boys for meetings. “And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that's a meeting.” The allegory throughout the novel makes the book intriguing and lures the audience in to continue reading and discovering more symbolic aspects of the book.
In the novel, Lord of the flies the conch shell represents power or in other words law and order. This novel carries out a civilization vs savagery theme. In Lord of the flies the characters are very dynamic and use the conch shell to overpower one another. The conch shell may show corruption or it may show alignment
Lord of the Flies is an allegorical novel in which every person, place, thing, and event creates a parallel to another theme or idea. Golding uses these symbols to represent a much more complex idea. Overall, symbolism played an important role to develop the plot, as well as the overall theme. The main theme portrayed throughout the novel is the idea that savagery is within every person. Golding’s use of various symbols throughout Lord of the Flies, including the conch, the fire, Piggy’s glasses, and Ralph’s hair, show the boys’ gradual loss of civilization as events on the island bring out the savagery within them.
vote for Ralph to be chief just because he was the one with the Conch.
