While time passes, people find themselves wanting to go back to simple days where they didn’t have to grow up so fast. Each person has a different story and watching life while feeling stuck can drive people to create a different world for themselves. As Holden develops in life he finds ways to contain his childhood innocence. He continues to run away from school because he sees his peers getting older and leaving him behind. He has a problem mentally processing the fact that he will have to find a purpose so he runs away from it and find small ways to take him back to when he was a kid.He knows things are changing, but he wants “certain things to stay the way they are.” (136). He soon finds himself angry and sad while watching people do normal things in their everyday lives. He calls them phony because he knows he can’t fit in with the others. Holden also does many things that he believes will make up for the fact that he can’t fit in with others. He smokes and drinks to make it look and feel like he’s older and mature, but he’s really trying to mask his emotions. He tries to block the world out, but he can’t see that it eventually caught up with him. It is why he began to feel like he had no purpose in life and find himself lost in a sea of self-assured people. In the end, Holden slowly begins to acknowledge that he has people who care about him to help him through the process of growing up. He listens to the people around him and is open to letting go of some of his innocence. He knows he will soon find his niche in the world and sees things differently. At first, he couldn’t process the changes he went through, but he soon is able to understand that it’s up to him to make decisions and go through life one step at a time. He might not be able to catch every child in a field of rye, but he can learn let them go and discover their own
