Loneliness is a common problem faced by characters in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Contrary to popular belief that there are only 3 basic necessities ( food, water, and shelter) of life, this story proves that companionship is vital for humans in order to live a healthy and happy lifestyle. This is shown through the dreams and changing behaviours of the four main characters in the novel. Candy’s character shows changes for the better as he creates lasting relationships with various characters in the book. After the loss of his dog and lone companion, Candy fears that “ I won’t have no place to go, an’ I can’t get no more jobs.”
Iman Manzoor Ms. Foster 9 Honors English 11 January 2016 Loneliness is a part of life. It is human nature to have a friend or companion to talk to, to share things with, and to help one get through the good and bad of life. When this person is absent, one tends to feel lonely and isolated. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is a good example of this.
Loneliness is a major issue that happens to many people on a daily basis. Sometimes loneliness can lead to suicide. It is even considered to be one of the feelings that make you become depressed. In Steinbeck’s story, loneliness is displayed in the characters and it also has an impact on their behavior. Loneliness becomes a major theme in the story and this theme is one of the main reasons for the sad ending, in which Lennie killed Curly’s wife and then he got shot.
When you think of “lonely characters”, many come to mind, for many different reasons. Forrest Gump is a perfect, well known archetype of loneliness. He lives a life of solitude, having not many friends due to his disability. Even though there are people who love him and care for him, they don’t truly relate to his way of life. He spends most of his life away from home, dealing with death frequently.
A young African American worker sits in his room reading while the rest of the workers are away. An elderly man lives in fear that he will soon be kicked off of the ranch due to his old age. A misunderstood woman desperately tries to find someone to talk to. Though surrounded by others, each person on the ranch feels lonesome. Of Mice and Men, a novel written by Steinbeck, is set during the Great Depression.
Because Crooks is black, readers can infer that he is treated unfairly and is separated from society because of his race; consequently, Crooks is bitter and lonely, wanting to not be left out and discriminated against. Crooks being black has made him an outcast from the other ranch man. Crooks explains this to Lennie: “S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black… S’pose you had to sit out here and read books” (72). A few pages later, Crooks becomes more bitter the more people enter his room, especially around candy: “Guys don’t come into a colored man’s room very much.

Curley’s wife dreams of becoming an actress, but her loneliness causes her to seek the attention of the men of the ranch, which results in her death. Curley’s wife is first introduced when Candy is showing George and Lennie around the bunkhouse. She comes into the bunkhouse dressed up with make up on her face, asking them if they have seen Curley while leaning forward to show her body. This shows loneliness because she tries so hard and dresses up to catch the attention from someone on the ranch. Curley’s wife again comes when Candy and Lennie are in Crooks’ room because all the other men are out in town. She again asks the men if they have seen her husband. They look to the door to see her face heavily made up while breathing heavily as if
In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck addresses the theme of loneliness and isolation. The novel tells the story of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, who while traveling together chase the American Dream. This becomes difficult because society misunderstands Lennie’s thought process. This gets him into trouble that George has to get him out of. This connection George and Lennie shared was rare for workers during this era. Migrant workers never stayed in one location for too long. They also traveled by their lonesome. Not only this, but many people were also social outcasts and shunned by society. Steinbeck establishes the theme of loneliness and isolation, a very common problem throughout the Great Depression, by telling of those that are alone and others actions towards them.
Crooks not only deals with loneliness in Of Mice and Men but also has to deal with racism and segregation. Though racism is only shown through one character, it gives a general idea about how racism and segregation was during the Great Depression. Despite the fact Crooks does have his own place in the barn, the ranch hands do not want to be around him for the fact that he is African American and he “stinks.” “‘Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but i can’t play because I’m black.
During the 1930’s there wasn’t much happiness, most people who didn’t own land had a rough go of things, and they most definitely weren’t good times. So with that, the theme for the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, is loneliness, a character that represents this theme is Lennie. E= As most of us who have read the book know, John Steinbeck portrayed the character Lennie, as being a little bit “slow. L= He in fact, was the only man at the ranch, that was “slow”. George, Lennie’s caretaker, even mentioned this to the boss when they both first arrived at the ranch telling the boss, “He ain’t too bright, but he’s a hell of a good worker”.
In an every man for himself society, do people face loneliness? John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men revolves around the strong bond between George and Lennie and contrary to many in the time period, the two characters show no sign of discrimination and work together to achieve their American Dream. When they arrive to work at a farm, several of the other characters see the friendship between George and Lennie and begin to express their loneliness. During the Great Depression, men and women alike had no one to turn to in the every man for himself society as portrayed by Steinbeck’s characters: Crooks, Curley’s wife, and Candy.
The opening of Of Mice and Men achieves the effect of establishing tranquility. It is a safe place for Lennie and George, and is the opposite of later events that would occur there. It emphasizes the beauty and how Lennie feels safe there. When George finds Lennie there after he kills Curleys wife, the beauty and tranquility help Lennie imagine the farm he wants to live on, which George wants him to visualize so he is happy and peaceful when George kills him.
