How Does Steinbeck Present Loneliness In Of Mice And Men

Loneliness is a major theme in novels and novellas. Many authors express loneliness in their writing to show some tension building up in the novels or novellas. Some authors do not expresses loneliness but instead, they present another theme such as sexism. John Steinbeck writes about how many characters are lonely in Of Mice and Men. Steinbeck presents loneliness through the characters in the novella such as Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife throughout the novella. Steinbeck shows that Crooks is lonely because no one talks to him in the novella. Racism still existed during the Great Depression and it's still expanded in California. Here Crooks explaining to Lennie why he can not play cards with the other people, “They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black” (Steinbeck 68). Crooks is a black man that is why he is not treated the same like the other people on the ranch. Crooks is willing to fight for equal rights against the whites. Here Crooks telling Lennie he can not come in his room, “You got no rights comin’ in a colored man’s room” (Steinbeck 80). Candy is a lonely old man, who lost his dog. Here is Candy suggesting to join on George and Lennie’s plan to get their own ranch, “I’d make a will, an’ leave my share to you guys in case, I kick off, cause I ain’t got no relatives nor nothing” (Steinbeck 59). Candy does not have anyone to give the money to except George and Lennie. Candy lost his hand while working on the ranch and he feels sad because he only has one hand. Here is Candy telling George and Lennie the truth, “I ain’t much good with on’y one hand” (Steinbeck 59). He does not offer much help or work with only one hand because all the jobs on the ranch require hard work with both
