Kids today are different than the kids growing up a few years ago. Advances in technology means today’s kids have the world at their fingertips. There are many positive and yet negative aspects of having so much readily available to them. It can be said that a negative aspect of current technology is a lack of attention among students today. In 2010 six to seven percent of school aged children were diagnosed with this disorder (Piumatti, Sacconi, Zucchetti, & Rabaglietti, 2014). That was five years ago, more and more students are being diagnosed with this disorder every day. This disorder is diagnosed by a child’s lack of attention for their age or inability to keep still (Piumatti, Sacconi, Zucchetti, & Rabaglietti, 2014).

Music is a big part of today’s children and the learning process. When most babies begin learning they learn things through song and it is important to incorporate these tactics in the classroom. Music has a great ability to stimulate students and it reaches tactile, auditory and visual learners (Rajan, 2010). This is a great way to ensure that the teacher is differentiating to meet the needs of all their students.

Technology has only been around for 20 years and has already inflicted pain on many. Especially those that are students and did not become used to the new style of teaching compared to the new style of teaching. The old style of teaching is the classical version where students are able to learn what they love to do instead of taking all the classes children hate and end up failing. Early education teachers are familiar with using music and rhythm as tools for learning language and building memory. (Foran, 2009) Several musical melodies are used in grade school to learn information. Music is used in my math classes across the world to enhance the learning process of formulas. English classes use music help children learn prepositional phrases, adjectives, adverbs, noun, and etc. However, after most scholars reached a certain grade level, using music to achieve new heights academically became a technique of the past. Most instructors didn’t bother using music in order to help retain information. It was almost as if it was forgotten about. The students in this resource class had learning or behavioral disorders including: ADD, ADHD, or intellectual disabilities. By observing the students, I noticed most seemed anxious, rested or impatient. I think these characteristics related to them having an attention disorder. Students were impatient while waiting to answer questions or easily disrupted the class with a random thought. Some students had trouble staying focused and would look around the room. The teacher would have to say let’s stay focused or pay attention throughout the lesson.
In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought on some concerns and some praises. Learning disabilities can cause a great deal of stress and frustration to the children and adolescents who have them as well as for their families. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the more common learning disabilities. It is defined as a psychological disorder where those who have it experience impulsivity, inattention and/or overactivity (Kail & Zolner, 2012, p. 461). Children with this disorder have trouble developing social skills and can have difficulties with peer relations in return (Kail & Zolner, 2012, p. 461). I would have to say that technology is ruining children's lives. The more new things come up the more lazy we get. I would have to say that having a phone is very distracting, but I am able to stay off of it. Not many kids have grown up to be on electronics, but now every kid in the US has some type of device that distracts them from going outside. I run out on errands on a daily basis, and frequently I encounter a parent with kid following behind like a zombie, holding a phone. I assure that everyone has seen the rowdy child at the grocery store performing the tantrum of their life, until of course the parent hands them their phone. Kids of the new generation are growing up in a technology based environment. Technology has the ability to facilitate our everyday lives, although at what cost? Kids are being psychologically affected everyday as they have access to technological devices or the internet. I work at an after-school care program in which I interact with children from the ages of five through fourteen. I also have brother in third grade, and a sister in fifth grade. Therefore I have a first-hand experience in witnessing the drastic effects technology is having on the kids, as well as in school.
The times are changing, when I was younger I had some great times playing games outside with my friends and neighbors, but unfortunately ten years later I rarely see kids out playing. In today’s society children are substituting healthy outdoor recreation with indoor technology use. As time goes on more and more technology is coming out on the market that is brilliant and fascinating. But in reality, this brand new technology is depriving young children from the outdoor recreation that they need in order to stay physically healthy and to mentally develop properly. Also, this technology is robbing young children of necessary time spent interacting with their peers. Music is memorable – many persons can easily recall the lyrics to a favorite song no matter when they last heard it. Teachers can harness the power of music in order to help students remember and comprehend course material. According to the John Hopkins School of Education’s website, music has countless uses in the classroom. They cite that simply playing music brings energy to the classroom – improving moods and inspiring students to learn. In addition, allowing students to create their own music inspires creativity in the classroom and teachers can aid students in the memorization process by creating catchy tunes (Johns Hopkins). Finally, music brings culture into the classroom by integrating local flavors of life and human expression. Different regions can integrate their own music into the classroom which generates originality and personal localized expression. Children are become less intelligent because of one thing parents are giving them. By 2010, two-thirds of children ages 4 to 7 had used an iPhone (Joan Ganz Cooney Center). In this growth of their life children’s brain develops fine motor skills, gross motor skills, speech and language, cognitive, and social and emotional development. (Brain Development in Children) Technology, as in screens, can make these developments suffer. Young children are negatively affected by technology, resulting in poor academic skills, poor life skills, and delayed developmental stages.
There is a psychological benefit of having music incorporated in school. The brain expands the time in which the attention of a student is engaged in the lesson. Neurophysiiological distinction is also developed during the course of a child’s learning journey, after having music instilled in the education process.
