The development of writing came from the need of central governments to organize and record public works projects. It was mainly the need to record taxes that funded these projects that promoted writing.

Post World War 1 emerged a new way of thinking. That new way of thinking came from the men and women that served in the war, they were quickly referred to as The Lost Generation. An area heavily influenced by The Lost Generation was literature. F. Scott Fitzgerald was one author that came out of The Lost Generation and reached pinnacle heights. In the 1600’s women and men were blamed for witchcraft that apparently happened in the small towns. Everyone was blamed when a child started acting up because everyone thought that someone was putting their spirit amongst them. This is all shown in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller shows the life in a small village of people with a church and kids. Kids acting really weird because of ‘witchcraft’, and all of the women being accused of witchcraft because of what it says in the Bible. Reverend Parris shows in the play The Crucible that the Bible doesn’t lie, but also people don’t lie or try not to lie when their lives are put on the line.

In today’s society one would not be able to communicate effectively with the world if writing was not involved. People all around the world send emails, texts, and letter to numerous amounts of individuals each second. Talking on the phone is slowly becoming a thing of the past while the writing side of technology is taking over. The meaning of writing is changing in society. Writing used to be specifically for academics or the occasional letter to a loved one. As time has passed writing has taken more forms and more meanings. In the world we live in now writing is classified as texting, emailing, instant messaging, and even comments or tweets on social media. Although writing has these multiple new forms, it still holds its academic side strongly. Everything with meaning in turn affects a person’s day to day life. Writing has the effect of making one more intellectual. Writing has become a bridge between communication and the cultures and people of today’s society. It gives way for different options in stating sentences or phrases. (Olson). Each affect should change with age. As a person grows older, their writing styles should mature and take on a more professional aspect.

Then big changes come about and bring them inspiration. Cultural challenges such as race gave writers the chance to write about the inequality of citizens, specifically African Americans and Whites. Everybody has their own point of view, their own way of interpreting things, and this contributed to the varying of writers and their styles. Between the late eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century, the writing style is in the romanticism period. This time. Produced many famous authors that are well-known today. Writers began to fray from the fantasies and fairytales made up from their imagination and began to write using factual-based information. This became a substantial adjustment for several authors and their work. Realism was a subject of literature shaped by the Civil War and composers of that time, such as Abraham Lincoln, who came to understand the absoluteness of life.

The way of learning and reading has changed dramatically over many generations because of new technological advances. Learning is the knowledge acquired through experience, study, or being taught. In Birkerts essay, he explains that learning and how we gather information has changed over time. He says newspapers, magazines, brochures, advertisements, and labels are things that are around individuals every day. These are things that individuals will read to gain knowledge of certain things that are going on. For example, individuals will read labels on food items to see what the food is made out of because some individuals are allergic to certain ingredients and need to know this information. Time has changed the way individuals learn. Learning at one time was all from books and individuals taking notes on those books. Years ago, books were rare and that is what individuals used to learn and when they had a book they had to take out all they could from that book. Learning has gone from just books to many different ways of receiving information. Today’s big new way of learning is from the internet. Individuals have gone from staring at a book for hours to typing a question they have into the internet and getting results back from many sources. More people were beginning to write about their own lives. Humanist especially were writing more about the importance of the lives of humans instead of secular existence.
