Writing has changed a lot over the years. The hot topics fade and new ones replace them. From early America to 1870 there was not many changes in the topics because there was not as many people as there are now. There was only three considerable changes to writing styles and topics. The writing styles and topics over the years have changed from myths, to God, and finally to individualism. Writing started off as myths. There are four functions of a myth. This was in play when the Puritans came over and settled in America. They tried to be godly and always do the correct thing. An example of this type of writing is The Crucible. The Crucible is a play written about a true event. These godly people did not like witches. They thought that witches were possessed by the devil so they killed them. They thought they were doing the right thing, but some people took advantage of it. Those girls were ungodly, but everyone thought they were godly. The Puritans thought that children were innocent (they never lied). That is not the case and these ungodly children took advantage and twisted these people's minds. Some people were godly and did the right thing but most people were not, even though that is what they thought they were doing. Those people thought that they were ridding Salem of the devil and allowing God back in but what they were really doing was pushing God out and opening the door for the devil. When the Puritans arrived in America, they changed the style and topic of writing to

In the 1600’s women and men were blamed for witchcraft that apparently happened in the small towns. Everyone was blamed when a child started acting up because everyone thought that someone was putting their spirit amongst them. This is all shown in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller shows the life in a small village of people with a church and kids. Kids acting really weird because of ‘witchcraft’, and all of the women being accused of witchcraft because of what it says in the Bible. Reverend Parris shows in the play The Crucible that the Bible doesn’t lie, but also people don’t lie or try not to lie when their lives are put on the line.

Poetry was told through song by bards such a
Many earlier aspects of writing are still in effect today. Major events in United States history have brought new reforms to the writing world. Things such as war, racial discrimination, and economic downfall can have a huge impact. Writers go through several opportunities of things to write about or have a general theme about. Then big changes come about and bring them inspiration. Cultural challenges such as race gave writers the chance to write about the inequality of citizens, specifically African Americans and Whites. The way of learning and reading has changed dramatically over many generations because of new technological advances. Learning is the knowledge acquired through experience, study, or being taught. In Birkerts essay, he explains that learning and how we gather information has changed over time. He says newspapers, magazines, brochures, advertisements, and labels are things that are around individuals every day. These are things that individuals will read to gain knowledge of certain things that are going on. For example, individuals will read labels on food items to see what the food is made out of because some individuals are allergic to certain ingredients and need to know this information. Time has changed the way individuals learn. Learning at one time was all from books and individuals taking notes on those books. Years ago, books were rare and that is what individuals used to learn and when they had a book they had to take out all they could from that book. Learning has gone from just books to many different ways of receiving information. Today’s big new way of learning is from the internet. Individuals have gone from staring at a book for hours to typing a question they have into the internet and getting results back from many sources. Birkerts describes this in his essay, “As we now find ourselves at a cultural watershed-as the fundamental process of transmitting information is shifting from mechanical to circuit-driven, from page to screen-it may be time to ask how
