The genre of drama dates back to 5th century B.C. Greece. Drama is a form of writing in which there are many layers, and meanings to a story. Drama is written in the expectation that it is to be performed on a stage for an audience. This is an analysis of dramatic theater, what it is and how it has changed over time. The Theater experience is walking into a room with many people sitting in the direction of a stage. As the curtain on the stage rises there is a set, a house, and the actors appear. The actors begin conversing, like a normal family at home would, but they never address the audience. There is an imaginary “fourth wall” on the stage in which you can see into this house with these actors, but it is as if the actors cannot see you, the audience. This suspends your reality of just sitting in a theater, you are now in this place and time with these actors as an observer of …show more content…
During this time it was used in festivals to celebrate the Greek god Dionysus. In the Middle Ages drama was performed on the basis of religious views. Drama really started to thrive during the English Renaissance in the 16th and 17th century. During this time one of the most iconic and remarkable dramatic writers produced most of his work. This man was William Shakespeare. He is best known for “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hamlet”. Modern dramatic writing focus on a many diversity of subjects from religion to love to fantasy. Since the erection of drama there have been many changes to commence. For instance, in the beginning there could only be male actors. All roles in a play were performed by men. The first women to perform in a theatrical production was in William Shakespeare’s “Othello” in the year 1660. Another big change in theater came after the discovery of electricity. This discovery made it possible to perform during the night time, where there was no longer any natural light to light the
The actors were expected to perform their own stunts. They had to have a good memory to learn and memorize their lines in a short time period. William Shakespeare acted in some of the productions of the plays. Males had to act out the female parts of the plays because females were not allowed to perform in theaters at this time. Although, all of the actors worked hard, the males who dressed up as females got paid the least; this proves they had a lot of dedication to their work. The actors help make the plays at the theater a huge success and very profitable to The Theater.
During the 19th century, theater adopted a realistic viewpoint by romanticism but also a rise in modern nationalism to give people a sense of belonging in a community or culture (Carlson 2014: 21). In the 20th century, realism in theater was challenged and plays were now easier to attend due to the improvements of communication and the ability to reach other areas of the world by travel (Carlson 2014: 23-24). Theater is another addition to the world of art that is continuously evolving and adapting to the world and cultures influencing its
Shakespeare started his career trying to be an actor. In that time, it was very hard for an actor to do well and get bigger parts if they weren’t a well-known actor or actress. So he tried writing plays. It turned out , he was pretty a good writer. People liked his plays so much they would skip work to go see them. The play they like the most of his is Romeo and Juliet. Back in his times, there were two main types of plays, a serious adventure type and a comedy
“Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances” said by Stanford Meisner. Theatre is an area of arts where you can be free from reality and imagine the impossible. Some of my favorite things about theatre are, the people that are involved, how helpful theatre is and how helpful everyone is, then my last thing is how much fun we have. One of my top favorite things about theatre is the people that are involved within it. Every person has a different personalities, that put together makes a new and neat experience. Theatre is an important part of my life and I enjoy every minute, while I’m there.
I attended the workshop production of Sons at the University of Washington Jones Playhouse. The theatrical space consisted of a thrust stage with the audience sitting on three sides, and the distance between the actors and audience was small. To combat this tiny space, the fourth wall was established to keep the actors separate from the audience. As a result, the audience was kept at an aesthetic distance thus allowing them to envision the events unfolding. My viewing was positively affected by the close distance because it permitted me to
The role of women has changed drastically over the last few decades. Not only has it changed in society, but also in playwrights and theater. In the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, women were looked down upon, and did not have the ability to make decisions in the household. Men were in charge of everything that occurred in the house, as well as, what his family did or did not do. Over the years, as the role of women changed in society, there was a similar change in the role of women in theater also. When theater first began, females did not play a role in performing plays. Young boys, and even men at times, were used to play the part of the women. Plays in the past are used today to show gender differences and the ways in which men viewed women. Although there were gender differences, when played important roles in playwrights and were faced with difficult situations.
From his tragic story of Hamlet to the romantic comedy The Tempest, William Shakespeare has been capturing his audience since he started writing in the late 1500's. When Shakespeare first started writing in 1590, he began writing plays, both tragedies and comedies, then he wrote poetry called sonnets. It is said that he last thing he wrote was finished in 1613, because as people suggest, that was when he lost his sight. He died three years later in 1616. He is known around the globe for his writing style and unique plots. His plays are studied in high schools and colleges around the world. Shakespeare has made history with his literature. During the Renaissance, Shakespeare wrote in three different genres, comedy, tragedy, and poetry.
I tried to imagine that I go to a big theater to watch plays with uniform many years ago. It is a very classic and formal show for me. I think that the plays will be better than the vast majority of television shows or movies because the live shows more need actors’ performance on the stage. The audience can see the actors reveal feelings more easily. A good plays and a paper drama are inseparable. When I see a paper drama, I can find there are a setting of scenes and characters at first. Then it appears so many dialogues between different characters. Maybe it is very boring and tedious without performance when you are reading it. However, I can have much fun from reading the paper drama. I can imagine that the characters’
Drama literature is told through a story of dialogue about a character who experiences conflict through out the play. These kind of plays are often performed on the stage of a theatre. One of the most famous screenwriters of the 16th through the early 17th century was William Shakespeare, and his work continues to live on in the 21st century. The longest play Shakespeare had ever written was Hamlet, which is about a young prince who grieves over the death of his father and seeks revenge as he learns that it was King Claudius responsible for his death. Through out the play Hamlet expresses his thoughts through different soliloquys. Hamlets soliloquy in Act I “O that this too, too sullied flesh” contrasts from his famous soliloquy in Act III “To Be or Not to Be” and both reflect issues of the times in which Shakespeare had lived in.

William Shakespeare is known to be the “greatest English-speaking writer in history” and an England’s national poet, actor, and an extremely successful playwright. During Shakespeare’s acting career in London, he started writing all about “European geography, culture, and diverse personalities (History.com).” Willm Shakspere or William Shakspeare, as written by him, then went on to write plays. His first three plays were all created around or a little before 1592 and captured the core studied categories; tragedy (Titus Andronicus), comedy (The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors and The Taming of the Shrew), and history (Henry VI trilogy and Richard III). He wrote plays and sonnets for many theater companies, was one of the main playwrights for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which was renamed the King’s Men when James I was in charge, and formed the Globe theater in 1599 with other partners. Shakespeare’s unique language, themes, verses, format, characters, and plots makes his writing universal to every culture and time period. Shakespeare is still taught in school nowadays due to its’ educational and transitional purposes. Shakespeare continues to influence modern-day life and I believe will for a long time to come.
“Women’s roles in the plays were acted by men or, more commonly by boys.” (Bommarito, 267). Boys were used for women’s roles because of their small figures and higher pitched voices. The boys began acting at the age of ten, learning the correct way to walk and talk on the stage. In addition they were also taught the art of applying make-up moving gracefully in the many layers of clothing that the Elizabethan women wore at that time.
The place of women within the theatre is well known, that being that they had no place within the stage. Women's parts were played by young men in
Theatre is an art that transcends time and builds a new world for the audience atop the stage. A play is defined as “a dramatic composition” or “the stage representation of an action or story” (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary). This refers to drama being performed live by actors on a stage. Ancient Greece is accredited to inventing theatre and drama. In Greece during that time, at the height of popularity, were the stories of the well known flawed heroes and their journeys.
