It is a universally acknowledged fact that the Holocaust of the 1940s is one of the greatest tragedies in human history. A ruthless tirade by Adolf Hitler, German dictator and leader of the Nazi party, resulted in the death of over eleven million Jewish people and minorities, and its dire consequences affect the entire human race to this very day. Yet although we now collectively look back upon the Holocaust in horror and dismay, people had dramatically different perspectives on the situation at the time it occurred. Take, for example, high-ranking Nazi official Heinrich Himmler, and the juxtaposition of his radical Aryan supremacist views against those of Italian Jew Primo Levi. Heinrich Himmler Tasked to carry out the plans of the “final solution to the Jewish question” following the Wannsee Conference of 1942, Heinrich Himmler was considered by many to be the second most powerful man in Germany during the Nazi leadership. He was born into a conservative Catholic family, planning to someday joining the army and fight for his country. However, his dreams were shattered when the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, restricting Germany from building their army in an attempt to prevent further battle after World War One. Filled with rage and a newfound hatred for anybody anti-Germany, Himmler began to study racist-nationalist literature, which was gaining popularity within right-wing politics across the nation.
