In The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is shown as insane, intelligent, and competitive. Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he admits he hunts and kills human. “Why should I not be serious? I am speaking of hunting.” “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.” The general laughed with entire good nature. He regarded Rainsford quizzically. “I refuse to believe that so modern and civilized a young man as you seem to be harbors romantic ideas about the value of human life”. (Connell 70). Rainsford’s eyes saw only blackness, and then, as the general pressed a button, far out to sea Rainsford saw the flash of lights. The general chuckled. “They indicate a channel,” he said, “where there’s none: giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws. They can crush a ship as easily as I crush this nut”. (Connell 70). Zaroff shows that he is intelligent during this scene because he is able to trick ships easily with a light. Lastly, Zaroff is also competitive in the story. He is competitive when he goes into the hunt. “You’ll find this game worth playing” the general said, enthusiastically. “Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?” (Connell 74). This part shows that Zaroff is competitive because he is eager to show who is better at all of those things.
