Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote two very touching poems. Both similar, but different in many ways as well. Also both written in very two different parts of his life. One of them he wrote when he was young and one when he was quiet a bit older. One of them being " A Psalm of Life". In this poem Longfellow expresses that everyone should live in the moment because tomorrow may or may not come but we are not in charge of that so we might as well enjoy our life. By saying this we also shouldn't dwell on the past because that is out of our hands as well. He believes that we should leave our mark on this world when we unfortunately have to leave it, and hopefully make people remember us. By making people remember us he preaches that we not follow
One day, two potters were spinning their wheels. Each potter had an onlooker watching them throughout their work. Both of them are fantastic potters, but they both have their secrets to each magical piece that they create. In the passage, ¨A Single Shard,¨ by Linda Park, and the poem, ¨Turn,Turn, My Wheel,¨ by Henry Longfellow there are many similarities and differences about how the speaker, and the narrator in the story view the potters.
While both Keats and Longfellow often reflect on their own unfulfilled dreams and impending deaths, the poems however contrast on their own dispositions towards death and the future. Here, Keats expresses a fear of not having enough time to accomplish all that he believes he is capable of doing, but as he recognizes the enormity of the world and his own limitations of life, he realizes that his own mortal goals are meaningless in the long run of things. On the other hand, Longfellow speaks of a regret towards his inaction for allowing time to slip away from him in his past and is at a crossroads for the ominous future that looms ahead of him. Through the use of light and dark imagery, and personification, Keats and Longfellow similarly yet also differently, reflect on their own ideas for death and the futures that lay ahead of them.
In Thomas’s poem, the tone is sorrowful with possible anger while in Longfellow’s poem it is more of an encouraging tone. At the end of Thomas’s poem, he becomes very personal and intense in the final stanza when he says “And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light” (Stanza 6). This is a reference to his father, asking him to put up a fight against death no matter what it takes. Do not just succumb to it. This is where the tone shows somewhat of anger along with the sorrow throughout the rest of the poem, possibly directing his anger towards his father. Towards the end of Longfellow’s poem, the encouraging tone has a sudden shift into a tone of empowerment when it says “Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,--act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead!” (lines 19-24). This basically says to live your life like it’s your last day on earth and do not follow the crowd. He is also saying that God is above so do not live in fear. Longfellow is telling you to stand out and make it all worth it, while not acting in the past or future, just act for today itself.
Overall, this poem shows the past, present, and future of the writer. His life is full of regret at points and then seems hopeful in others. This poem could be viewed in many ways but mostly you understand it as a man who wishes he could change his past because he knows his future is near and his life will soon be coming to an
In his poem, “The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow uses symbolism, foreshadowing, and personification, to demonstrate the Romantic ideal of the fatalism of life, and therefore the importance of placing individualism, and thus solitary survival within nature, over superficial safety. As the traveler begins his journey, the “twilight darkens”(Longfellow 2) foreshadowing the ultimate loss of the traveler's life. For in this case darkness is used to symbolize the end of life, as is the time of day for twilight is just before midnight, which symbolizes death. This symbolism of life is further reinforced by the cyclic nature of the tide which ceaselessly “rises…{and}falls”(3). As the traveler’s journey ultimately comes to
Another method for one to grasp the trend of culture would be through analyzing literature. The continual strife within America produced two sets of quite distinct styles of literature. One was Romanticism, which was practiced by many Transcendentalists, who believed in the positivity of life and emphasized progress. In reaction to a surge in optimism, American Gothic was introduced, plagued with death and horror, emphasizing how there were always negative aspects to life. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “A Psalm of Life” is quite resembling of these Romantic values. The work centers around a young man, who denies the claim that life is merely “an empty dream,” or that the soul is long dead. He suggests that life is full of potential and
Writers in The romantic Period wrote their pieces with emotion, compared to the Colonial Period when it was about information, and politics. Writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Ralph Emerson, and Henry Longfellow are some of the writers of this time. They all help shape and, make a path for the Romantic Period. The Romantic Period took place in the 1800’s, and was at its peak around 1850 or so. It originated in the area of Europe and was all about the spread of art, music, and writing.
Even though this poem is personal, but the writer gave a lot of lessons that it is relevant to our era like "No ties so strong, no friends so dear
“The tide rises, the tide falls” is the progression of time and death. Longfellow expresses that people should not afraid of this progression. All people must undergo this process, so they must accept this. Nature reveals the life attitude that people should have. There is another poet tries to guide people in a positive way to think
In the story,“A Psalm of Life” Henry Longfellow shows his message to his reader by the use of symbolism, below you'll find why this is to be believed .One reason is Longfellow stated the quote “Grave is not goal” (Longfellow 1). This shows how life goal is not to stop living the goal is to keep living. Which shows how Longfellow wanted the readers to get this message from reading his poem.
Longfellow said “Truest no future Howe’er pleasant”. This line shows the author disbelief in future achievements. He prefers to fight in the present without expecting any future alibi. This writer is projecting a realistic personality about life. He is not willing to see the future in a positive way. Instead, he use his present strength and reasonable though to face his daily problems. He has not faith, dreams or expectation about his future life and he just does things to survive one day at the time. In contrast to the poem “Invictus” by William Henley stated “I am the master of my fate; / I am the captain of my soul.” This statement shows the people decide what their future will be the enormous power of faith. All things that people do in
"A Psalm of Life" and "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" both by poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Emily Dickenson are similar poems expressed by theme, mood, and structure. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow forms a picture in his reader’s minds with his poem by expressing his theme of ‘living life for a purpose." His mood in the poem is inspiring, and motivating. "Act in the living present! Life is real! Life is earnest!" in this quote from the poem, Longfellow explains how a person should live their life for a purpose and make the best of it because it doesn’t last long. Longfellow sends a message to inspire its readers to live actively, and neither to lament the past nor to take the future for granted.
T.I. and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are two people from different generation, but they have the same point of view on life, saying that everyone should live their life to the fullest. The main similarities and differences between these two people and their poem/song is that they both convey the same message by telling people that they should be happy for what they got, and to not look at what is ahead or behind but look in the now. They also talked about how men have died for what they have. Whilst the difference is that T.I. says forget the other people and just do you and he talks about his personal life more. Henry W. Longfellow on the other hand is giving people purpose to life, not letting someone else control you.
Through his poem “The tide rises, the tide falls” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reminds us that there is a natural course of life which we are all subordinate to. He begins by introducing the dark night as a symbol of the death that awaits everyone. The poet calmly introduces us to a passing traveler, whose footsteps would soon be erased by “the little waves, with their soft, white hands.” There is a sense of easiness in the way all trace of him I erased. That is the natural way in which things happen. Through the braking of the morning we are faced with the reality that life goes on after death, things will continue to exist long after we are gone. The traveler never returns, but the day is still here and all creatures are beginning the cycle
“For Longfellow - an abolitionist -the decision of the united states and the impending war over slavery was as dangerous and threatening to america as the british troops were in 1775.” said by Franklin Johnson in the article “How Accurate Was Longfellow’s Poem?” In the article that speaks the truth states many different pieces of accurate information. In the correct article called “How Accurate Was Longfellow’s Poem”, states that that Henry Longfellow’s information was incorrect because he is not interested in the conversation or the topic that he is walking or writing about and so therefore is giving incorrect information. As stated in Longfellow’s poem he is giving a lot of INCORRECT information but getting away with it by stating “information” that is making his words seem believable by giving false information and stating different information and all of the things that are given with false information. The poem written by Henry Wadsworth was very incorrect because there were 3 different people who were involved in Paul Revere’s journey and in the poem only 1 person is mentioned, he gave incorrect information about the lanterns and how it was used, and in the poem he gives us a lot of information that is inaccurate and does not give us the correct ending as in the article about the poem it gives a perspective for Paul Revere and gives us somewhat of an ending that will tell us the truth. There are three different articles and they are all about Paul Revere and based all
