The Holocaust began during the Second World War and continued for 12 years. The word “Holocaust,” was used to describe a sacrificial offering burned on an altar (Holocaust). Today people know the Holocaust as a mass murder. With the Holocaust came mass killing centers, mobile killing squads, concentration camps, and mass shootings. January 30, 1933 President Hindenburg appoints Adolf Hitler Chancellor of Germany. He was Chancellor from 1933 to 1945. Hitler initiated the Second World War. Hitler’s spark with the war leaded to the invasion of Poland in 1939. The war would drag on for six deadly years until the final allied defeat of both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945 (World War II). Between 100,000 and 500,000 people were direct participants in the planning and execution of the Holocaust. Relatively few people helped Jews escape. The Soviet Forces were the first to liberate concentration camp prisoners in the final stages of the war. Finally, May 9, 1945 Germany surrenders to the Soviets. But it was too late, most of the Jews were dead by 1945. Civilization that had flourished for almost 2,000 years was no more (Holocaust). When she was born she had breathing problems. She also had an ear-splitting cry and was eight and a half pounds. She was the second child of two (Anne Frank). Her older sister, Margot, was three years older than her when she was born. Her parents were Edith and Otto Frank. Anne had her father wrapped around her finger from the moment he laid his eyes on her. Anne’s family lived in a community of Jewish and non-Jewish people (Anne Frank Biography). Anne’s mom wasn’t enthused about living in the busy city of Frankfurt. So soon the family moved into a stucco duplex townhouse at 307 Marbachweg Germany (Anne Frank). When Anne’s first birthday came along, financial depression set off by the stock market crash. By June 1932, Anne had just turned three. She was very active, and loved to play in her garden sandbox. Anne’s family initially stayed in Germany. But later in 1933, moved to Amsterdam. Anne was enrolled in a nursery school not long after her family moved to Amsterdam. Anne was an eager student of literature, writing, and drama, but even in her permissive private school, she was considered a chatterbox. Anne Frank was an unusual yet ordinary young lady.
