Death States As you may know the narrator of the book thief is Death. Death is a very important character in this great book. Death just thinks humans are really complex and throughout the book he sees the ugliness and beauty of the human race. He likes someone, in particular, which is Liesel. He thinks her story is beautiful. During my reading of this novel death would spoil something that will happen in the future and then apologize for it after. The question is does death have a heart? He proves he does due to his kindness to help the human race. “You see? Even death has a heart” (242 Zusak). Ugliness and beauty of Liesel’s life story, are shown abundantly in the book thief. Death is so interested in Liesel’s life because she is a survivor and she looks at life through rose colored glasses. Meaning she looks at the good things of bad situations and, she would rather risk her life for her friend, that …show more content…
The beginning when they met, Rudy asked her if they could race, and if he won he could get a kiss. Liesel won, after that they became best friends and they would do anything for each other. Rudy would help Liesel steal books, Rudy would protect her from Franz finding about about Max. I mean he is really skinny and not fed well, and he jumped into a freezing cold lake during winter time to get a journal for Liesel. So Max was not found or the Nazis did not suspect there was a Jew in their basement. Liesel and Rudy would hang out almost every day after school outside to play soccer or to just talk, he was beside her in the bomb shelters, and they even attempted to run away together. While running away they even yelled that they hated Hitler together. If Rudy would have lived to go through life with Liesel, I think it would have been an amazing story of love at first sight. Liesel lost her friend to Death during the bombing on the street of Heaven but had him in heart for the rest of her
He tells the story from his point of view as he takes a special interest in Liesel Meminger, by watching her and reading her stories. Death feels like he has an emotional connection with humans, and therefore dislikes his job of taking souls away. “It kills me sometimes, how people die…He does something to me, that boy. Every time. It’s his only detriment. He steps on my heart. He makes me cry” (Zusak, 329). Death feels like his job is a punishment, which makes it difficlult for him because he shouldn’t have a conscience but he does. The way he narrates the novel, makes us feel like he’s trapped inside. As he watched over Liesel, there were obstacles that got in the way. He didn’t have a choice when he had to take the Hubermann’s and Rudy’s life away. At the night of the Nazi book burning, Liesel looked around to see if anyone is watching her steal the book, but all along she did’t know that Death witnessed all her acts of thievery. In The Book Thief, death is an example of an atypical narrative structure whom takes upon himself to watch over an orphan who lost all her loved one’s after the bombings on Himmel street. The way the story was narrated made the novel seem more interesting, and makes us view it in a different
The Book Thief is set in the time of World War 2 where the Holocaust is present and disaster is everywhere. Throughout the story, Liesel, the main character, learns that words are extremely powerful and hold the ability for people to use them for good or for evil. Among the disaster and altercations, Liesel uses her literature to comfort her and make herself more powerful due to her knowledge, which demonstrates the theme of the story, the comfort and power of literature and words softens the pain of loss.
When a person observes/encounters death their willpower shows determination that helps them survive. The first glimpse we see of this is on page 21. On the train to Munich liesel's brother dies. His name is Werner. He later gets buried at a graveyard just by the train tracks. There was a little ceremony and Liesel and her mother carry on. One thing Liesel takes is the gravedigger's handbook. This is portraying to us on how she will eventually turn into a thief, hence “The Book Thief”. This quote is portrayed by death; “One eye open, one still in a dream. It would be better for a complete dream. I think, but i really have no control over that”. (5, 9) In this quote Liesel believes that the situation that had just occurred was a dream, but she knows that it is not. She learns to read the gravediggers book and it opens up the opportunity of books into her life. Another example of death is when Hans trades cigarettes for Mein Kampf. Hans’ history with Mein Kampf has been a wild one. On Hans’ way back from WWI he
Rudy and Liesel are empty without each other's company, they are like brother and sister, They know everything about each other. They know each other's tough and soft spots. They get into trouble together, but in the end find a way out of it... They met as strangers and appear, so but few knew about the strong, moving, and dynamic relationship of Liesel and Rudy. They fight but in the end they just learn that there are things that they will have to deal with. Rudy and Liesel are like lovers in the sense that they care deeply for one another, and would do anything for one another.
The acts of human nature can become a very difficult concept to understand. Markus Zusak uses Death throughout the The Book Thief to express the complexity of human nature. Death illustrates how complicated beings humans are and how they hold the capacity to act in both evil and beautiful ways. Throughout the novel Death helps give readers insight to the ignorance displayed and the pain it may cause a person. In the most troublesome and discriminatory times of the Holocaust, Death will point out the beautiful acts of compassion carried out by characters involved in the novel. Sometimes beauty and pain is mixed within the sacrifice some make for those they love and are loyal to.
The thought of Death being capable of emotion and speech is not something people normally think about but Zusak made this idea come to life. In Mark Zusak's book, The Book Thief, Zusak tells the story of the protagonist Liesel through the narration of Death. Although Death is a concept most people fear, Zusak made the narrator have more human qualities that makes them seem more empathetic, relatable and sympathetic.
In the beginning of The Book Thief Death says that he is the person going to be narrating the story. Death also says that we as the readers are going to die. Death takes the soul of Liesel’s little brother, “A six-year-old boy died in the third carriage.” (Page 20) I predict that as Death tells the story of Liesel Meminger he is going to take other peoples lives that are close with Liesel along with her life. I also predict that Death give meaning to as story that people might not have read in the first place. Death might give this story a light of its own with his descriptions.
The Book Thief starts out with a gloomy kinda character who starts off giving a truthful yet harsh fact. When you keep reading you realize that character is the narrator. The narrator in The Book Thief is Death. Death likes to observe colors so he can give himself a distraction. His favorite color is a very dark dark chocolate-colored sky. He uses these colors because he can't stand to look at the left over humans ( the survivor) but from time to time he fails. Death tells the story through his eyes. He tells you about the souls that he took. He tells you about the book
In ‘The Book Thief’, Death introduces itself as the narrator. Zusak has chosen Death as the narrator because he says that ‘Death is weary, he's fatigued, and he's haunted by what he sees humans do to each other because he's on hand for all of our great miseries.’ In this novel Death is interested by humans and the colours of the world, but he struggles to decode how humans are capable of so much beauty but at the same time ugliness. He shows an interest in Liesel’s story and describes the incidents in her life. His opinions are mostly on his understanding of humans and bold texts are used in the novel to correct humans understanding of him.
In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, there are many young characters that change and mature throughout the story. They are introduced as young children that know nothing of the horrible things that are happening in their country, but the few characters that survive to the end of the story leave as young adults with a view on life that few people have, one that values words and compassion.
Rudy did not have much food at his house so Liesel helped him keep his mind off things and she also stole food and books with him which made their friendship that much better. Liesel was always empathetic to both Rudy and Max. Max was hiding from Hitler and Liesel put herself in his shoes and tried to help him. When Max was sick for a long period of time Liesel used empathy and she read to Max while he was not waking up. Liesel was empathic to Rudy because even though she had enough food she did not like having the same meal everyday week
Liesel Suffering from unbearable pain of lost ones, the protagonist of the story Liesel goes through many tough situations. In The Book Thief, Liesel changes greatly from being sad and lonely due to her harsh past, to accepting reality and learning to love her In the beginning of the story, Liesel loses her father, brother and only had her mother left, but soon also loses her. She was alone all by herself, until she got taken in by someone else. Although, it didn’t change anything for her since she was still always reminiscing over her family.
The Whistler book is significant because the night that Liesel stole that book she got her official name, The Book Thief, hence the title of the book. On the way home after stealing the book, Liesel says, “‘Goodbye, Saumensch.’ He laughed. ‘Goodnight, book thief.’ It was the first time Liesel had been branded with her title” (202). Rudy was the first person to give her that title as the book thief, for her strange hobby of stealing books. That book also shows a title reference when Rudy gives her that name. Each different book Liesel has tolen has showed a different area in her life. When she stole her first book, she had just lost her brother and was getting ready to start a new life with her foster family. Also, when she stole the book,
Markus Zusak is the author as the well known book, The Book Thief. This book takes place during world war II, in the place known as Molching, Germany. The street named Himmel street, which translates to 'heaven street' is where young Rudy Steiner lives and begins his story. Rudy, the small, fast running, blonde boy has a special place in my heart for the story he shared, the lessons he learned, but more importantly the qualities the young boy possessed. Having bright blonde hair, big blue eyes, and strong muscles in his body, makes him an example of the ideal young boy Hitler is envisioning during this time. In the beginning of the story, compared to the end, Rudy's eyes were opened and his qualities were developed. In the beginning of the story, Rudy was beginning to see what's happening around him at the Hitler Youth Camp which he was an active member in at first, but being bullied by the kids in the youth who were seeing him with the love of his young life, Liesel.
Death performs his solemn duties that his job requires of him. Death’s job may come with pleasant moments but may also comes with dreary moments. Death wants to tell Liesel many things when they meet but he cannot think of anything to tell her that she does not already know. Death wants to tell her about beauty and brutality, that he always overestimates the human race, underestimated the human race, and that he rarely just estimates the human race. Death also wants to ask Liesel questions about how something may be glorious and ugly at the same time, and how words and stories may be brilliant and damning at the same time.
