T.J. In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, the characters in the book are very complex and don’t get along well with races other than their own in the segregated Mississippi of the 1930s. The Logan family is the main focus of the story as well as for one other character: TJ. But TJ is one of the characters who are in the main focus for a rather bad purpose. It’s because TJ is untrustworthy because he is reckless, manipulative, and most of all, disloyal. First of all, T.J. is untrustworthy is because he is reckless meaning he doesn’t really think or care about the consequences of an action. One example of this is that near the end of the book, he and two brothers go to a store, steal a gun, hurt a married couple, …show more content…
One clear way you can see this manipulation is with his friend who’s part of the Logan family, Stacy, who TJ keeps abusing for his own needs. For example, when he sees Stacy, with his new coat he got from Hammer, his uncle, he immediately makes a move to get the coat for himself. He discourages Stacy from continuing to wear the coat and to give it to him and in the process, continually tease him in his “fat preacher coat” until he eventually gives it to him. This shows me that he is much less a friend to Stacy and more like a controller. he teases Stacy and manages to control him to do whatever he wants is obviously very cruel, unjustified and make him undoubtedly …show more content…
An example of TJ being disloyal is when he blames Claude, his younger brother, near the beginning of the story for going to the Wallace’s store and so Claude got beaten up by his mom rather than TJ for no reason! This tells me that TJ is untrustworthy because he turns on his own family, just to paint himself in a good way and when doesn’t get his way, he blames others for his fault. Another example of him being disloyal is when he got caught cheating during the final exams, he went to the Wallaces, owners of the infamous Wallace store known for being discriminatory toward blacks, and told them that the teacher, Mama, who was the mother of the Logan family, she “...didn’t know nothing and wasn’t even teaching what she was s’posed to.”, and ended up getting her fired when it was only because he was displeased when he found out that he got caught. This shows TJ’s inability to be trusted because he betrayed his friends family and he clearly shows an absence of devotion to both support his grades and
He constantly makes or doesn’t make certain decisions in the hopes that his connection to others will remain as good as possible. He doesn’t perform a single action without thinking about how it makes others feel or the impression he gives about himself. The best example of this is the relationship he has with his father. Regarding the night that Jem’s curiosity drove him to sneak behind the Radley house, Scout wants to inform their father of the events that occurred. In response, Jem says, “‘I—it’s like this, Scout,’ he muttered. “Atticus ain’t ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way’” (Lee 75). Here, Jem shows his driving ambition to be seen as an admirable son in the eyes of his father. While this choice may also present a sense of dishonesty, it is later shown that Jem regretted disturbing the Radley home in the first place when he says, “‘I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley stayed shut up in the house all this time… it’s because he wants to stay inside’” (Lee 304). So, even though he’s concerned with the way that others think of him, the way he accomplishes this is to make changes to himself for the better. This is shown during the trial as well. When Jem supports Tom Robinson, whether it is for the approval of his father, the black community, or even himself, the motive doesn’t necessarily matter, so long as he actually

The past few weeks we have been reading the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. The book is about a black family called the Logans which were the times when the whites did not treat the blacks fairly. This book talks about how the Logans made it through hard and easy times. Some times they had to go through hard times like getting the payment for the land and some are easy times like when Uncle Hammer got his new packard. We got an assignment from our teacher to pick a character from the book and do an analysis of them. I picked Uncle Hammer.
Harlan Granger was a well respected white man who owned vast amounts of land in Mississippi during the Great Depression (1933). Although Mr. Granger owned so much land, he still wanted the 400 acres that the Logan's owned. Nevertheless, he was a greedy man who would do anything to regain possession of his land. To be greedy (greed) is “an intense or selfish desire for something, especially wealth, power, or food” (Macmillan) There were three incidents in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry that depicted Mr. Granger’s greed.
At the beginning of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (a book about racist plantation owners in Mississippi in 1933, where races were segregated) by Mildred D. Taylor, TJ and Stacey were friends. Then, TJ became friends with RW and Melvin. They stole a pistol and TJ was arrested. This is where the book ends. I think TJ is manipulative because he is dishonest to his teachers, persuasive to his friends, and easily controlled by RW and Melvin.
TJ gets himself in trouble with R.W. and Melvin Simms, two white brothers. The boys only want TJ around so they have someone to put the blame on and make fun of him. When TJ wants a very nice handgun at the Barnett Mercantile, the Simms brothers fool him into thinking that his dream is about to come true. RW and Melvin convinced TJ to try to steal the gun. They were caught in the act and the brothers punished TJ horribly. TJ tapped on the Logans door in the middle of the night. Stacey and Cassie answered the door. They knew they had to help him despite the negative acts against their family. “Stacey? I whispered afraid of what he might do. As far back as I could remember, Stacey had felt a responsibility for TJ I had never really understood why. Perhaps he felt that even a person as despicable as TJ needed someone he could call “friend”, or perhaps he sensed TJ’s vulnerability better than TJ did himself. Stacey, you ain’t goin’ are you?... You go on back to bed Cassie. I’ll be alright.” (pg. 249) This quote is a prime example of Stacey’s courage. Stacey knows that helping TJ could get him in trouble or even killed. Stacey is a true friend, and a brave one too.
In the story Confessions JJ the main character makes many moral decisions. JJ makes moral decisions throughout the story like joining the Protectors, lighting the lockers on fire, and the final incident. The first decision he makes is to join the Protectors. This gang was made by one of JJ’s friends Danny. Danny made this gang after his sister got raped and JJ says how no one will do that to Lacey so JJ wants to join to be able to protect Lacey. Also JJ wanted to end gangs and have to gangs wipe each other out and that's what the four members of the Protectors would do. Also JJ didn't have to join and could have left his friends to make a gang by themselves so in the future JJ wouldn't have to risk himself getting caught by them police or the gangs and get killed or go to
In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, one special Logan family, only driven by love, pride, and independence but through the mist they show another side… One foolish side. Their decisions in the novel lead them to numerous trouble and during the Great Depression one must be careful. Some of these decisions are Papa bringing Mr.Morrison home, Papa going to Vicksburg to boycott, and Uncle Hammer impersonating Mr.Granger.
“Then TJ emerged, dragged from the house on his knees. His face was bloody and when he tried to speak he cried with pain, mumbling his words as if his jaw was broken.”(pg 252) In Mildred D. Taylor’s Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, a family of African Americans and their friend T.J. face many conflicts. The story is set during the 1930s, in the South. The reader learns about sacrifices that one makes to protect themselves and others.
Finally he judges Jordan because he says that, “she was incurably dishonest”(58). With these examples just at the beginning of the story he becomes judgmental in the reader’s
Jeremy Simms played a crucial character in the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry written by Mildred D. Taylor. He represented a white male who did not mind what others thought of his decision to befriend the Logans who were African-Americans. The sole purpose of this novel is to portray the society in the year 1933 and display the differences between the commonalty which included Caucasians and African-Americans who were not treated equally. Many would say this well-written book has several different and effective themes. One major message that is consistently brought up throughout the book is to not mind what others have to say about you or your actions because if you do, it will only bring you sorrow and doubtfulness in yourself.
In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the Logan family have to work hard to keep his land. The family is victim of racism. The Logans are harassed by a school bus full of white children until they make a plan to get rid of it. The Wallace boys begin to burn black men, and Logan family begins a boycott of their store. Mama advices to the families in the community avoid buying at the Wallace’s. However, many families have nowhere else to shop so the Logans offer to buy goods for them in Vicksburg, and Mr. Jamison backs their credit. Meanwhile, both Uncle Hammer and Papa come home to join the family in Christmas. Uncle Hammer drives a nice new car. When Harlan Granger comes to try to convince the Logans to stop the boycott but they refused. However, Mama loses her teaching job, and more pressure is put on the Logan family. Other families are forced to return to the Wallace store. Then, Papa's leg is broken during a violent attack he suffers while trying to make a trip to Vicksburg. So L. T
Has greed ever caused you to feel hate towards another person? Greed is the theme for Roll of Thunder Hear, My Cry because it contained a lot of hatred derived from greed. Mr. Granger and the Wallaces hated the Logan family and those who boycotted the Wallace store because they were no longer gaining money from them. The Logan family and the people boycotting did so because they didn’t agree with what the Wallaces did towards African Americans; burning them alive and being part of the nightmen who did terrible things. The Wallaces were well supported by Harlan Granger. Harlan Granger has learned to resent the Logan family especially because they will not sell back his family's land whom sold it 50 years ago to the Logan family. The Wallaces and Mr. Granger get a huge amount of their income from the poor people who have to sharecrop on Granger land and get credit from the Wallace store whom are mostly African American and can’t find somewhere else to live. The theme of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is that greed is a cause of hatred which the author is trying to give to his readers.
Even though T.J. and Stacey are close friends they are not true friends. Throughout the book there are little signs that show that they are not true friends. Stacey does not trust T.J. because when T.J. goes
When Harper Lee was writing about the trial of Tom Robinson in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” she had a very real case to look to for inspiration. The trial of the Scottsboro Boys was a world renowned case in the 1930’s in which nine black youths were accused of raping to white girls in Alabama. Lee’s novel took this case and created the fictional case of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a lower class white girl in a small town in Alabama during the Depression-era. The Scottsboro trials were the main source of inspiration for Lee’s novel, and although the circumstances of the novel differed from the real-life scandal, the similarities between the two cases are quite abundant.
