How Necessary is College? Chances are if you have gone to school you’ve been told that you need to go to college to get a good job. This is only somewhat true. If you get a job straight out of high school, it is likely that you can make as much as a college graduate in the long run. College loans can hold back graduates as well. The debt for college graduates is enormous, in total surpassing all other personal debt in the U.S. For some it would suit them better to get a job in which they use their hands. Getting a college education for an occupation as a medical doctor can bring in a lot of money. Before you could make that money someone would have to hire you, which would be easy for a doctor. Whereas someone who majored in History or other subjects like English, sociology, psychology, art, music would have trouble finding employment. Someone who …show more content…
Some extremists even free college for all. However, many young people are talented and gifted in occupations that require hands-on and technical knowledge and that can pay well. For these people an apprenticeship is the best way to learn their trade. Plumbers, roofers, auto mechanics, carpenters, masons, etc. are always in demand and therefore are paid well. Imagine a society with no plumbers! Not everyone is college material, so why does the school system put so much emphasis on preparing everyone to go there? There is a saying that “The main job of a modern university president is to provide beer for the students, parking for the faculty and football for the alumni.” Colleges, for the most part, are not the inspiring institutions they once were. They were originated by the churches for the study of theology. Some would even say that today a college education is the equal to twelve cases of beer and a large helping of liberal pie. American society should explore the alternatives to the traditional four-year college
People who advertise college have went on and on about how it’s a necessity. The Puritans who created Harvard were worried about how college could lead to a shortage in the church. In College Calculus, John Dewey declares that a good education would make you a better citizen. With the increase of inequality in the world, receiving a college or post high school education is no longer the way to branch out from the rest of the society. College is now necessary to get
It is harder for a person to get a decent job without going to college, yet so many students fear graduating and being unable to find a job.
I feel that for those students that have inclination to attend college they should be encouraged and college should be an absolute right and should be made accessible at no cost since many top-performing students who come from low-income families have no chance of applying at top universities due to the cost, even though they have the ability to suceed. However, for those who have no intention, they should know that there are other options such as a trade or technical school, the military, or doing a on the job apprenticeship. Many students across the country that are choosing majors that do not lead to a viable career path after graduation. However, I have met welders that make over ninety-thousand dollars a year. In the other hand, I have also met people with a bachelors or masters degree that have no job and have a major debt in students loans. Many don't want to work in the the fields that they majored in because they don't have passion for it, or because it was their parent's dream not theirs. Others start college and then drop out because they were simply not ready, and end up feeing like total
College was made for a reason: better an individual, a community, and the world. To debate such a beneficial thing to our society is a waste of time. Not everybody can attend college, but we all benefit from it, as it helps us discover our world and progress us
Is College Important?? There's a debate as to whether college is important/mandatory or is having an option better. Expressed by two author's in two text "Who needs college? The Swiss opt for Vocational School" by Helen Bachmann and "Even for cashiers college pays off" by David Leonhardt, both authors share their perspective on the debate that having an option doesn’t necessarily mean college is a mandate.
However, there is only about 35% possibility on actually finding success at college. The entrepreneurs, which has higher possibilities on finding success explains, it is often better to work right after high school graduation. Many big entrepreneurs never completed college. Bill Gates states, “If you have an idea and a strong work ethic, you’re often making a strong choice chasing that dream instead of stopping and following a degree path”. According to Big Future at bigfuture.com, “Some high school graduates may choose to work for a service organization for a few years in order to figure out what they want to do with their life (and also spend that time benefitting others)”. There are enough successful and accurate possibilities out there for high school graduates. Going to college might be a risky thing to do when finding success. So why not choose the path that is a lot accurate and

The research topic of the connection between students who are in college and the level of stress they inquire financially and generally has had a huge impact on society. College is a very essential tool for life. College is meant to learn and experience a variety of techniques to use in your everyday life. On the other hand, college can become a very stressful place, whether it’s because of your financial status or in general. The increase in responsibilities after transitioning from a young adolescent to an adult is a cause of stress. There are two different sources of stress, external stress and internal stress. External stress is getting a bad grade on an assignments/test or relationship problems. Internal stress are motivators that put high expectations on one’s self to accomplish or achieve something. Financial stress is worrying about how you are going to pay for something and where you will get the money to pay for it. In academic communities financial stress can cause low performance in school work. Also, stress can cause the low rate of attendance in the academic communities. The amount of workload assignment wise and job wise can significantly bring stress due to the balance between the two. A solution for financial stress and general stress could be to make more scholarships and grants available to students, and find ways to relieve stress.
Jobs are something almost everybody has to do to make enough money to buy regular human necessities. Since money is so hard to come by, why do people waste it on college when, “a college degree once all but guaranteed a well-paying job and higher earnings than high school graduates. But fewer of these good jobs are now available because of both long-term economic changes and the lingering effects of the Great Recession.”(Semuels). Going to college and
For decades people have been wondering why receiving a college education is important. Why would someone pay thousands of dollars for classes that they will not need in the real world? One main reason is to receive the job that they want; now many jobs require a college degree to be an applicant. And even though you will have to pay for many classes that will not benefit you, some classes will teach you new skills to help you in the future, and lastly, if you have a college degree, you will most likely make more money.
Going straight into the workforce after high school is becoming more and more popular. Though the number of students obtaining a high-school diploma has risen, the number of students attending college is slightly decreasing. According to the Alia Wong, an award-winning journalist, “The percentage of high-school graduates who immediately enrolled in college fell from 69 percent in 2008 to 66 percent in 2013” which could be from the cost of tuition and the realization that just maybe you can make it in the real world without a bachelor’s degree. In Charles Murray’s essay, “Are Too Many People Going to College?”, he describes that kids who are not as academically inclined should consider the competition they will face when they graduate. For example, someone who is not academically inclined but is skilled with their hands might decide to go straight into the workforce because they will have the chance to become the best in what they do. In many jobs throughout the country, “the income for the top people in a wide variety of occupations that do not require a college degree is higher than the average income for many occupations that require a B.A.” (Murray 247) so for people who can start right after high school have more time to work through the ranks. Another reason high school graduates go straight into the workforce is the cost of tuition has skyrocketed. The average cost to attend a public college in America, is $20,090 and textbooks add another $1,250 a year. Once again, someone who excels with their hands instead of their brain would be better off going into a job of their choice than spending $80,000 for an education that they might be able to live
“Dehumanized”, an article written in Harper’s Magazine by Mark Slouka, discusses the topic of if higher education should provide students with variety of classes to improve personal knowledge and awareness such as classes in the humanities, or if just the educational needs for the student to obtain their career oriented degree should be completed. This arises the question of what is the purpose of a four-year college degree? The purpose of higher education is to help students obtain a suitable education that fits their desired career needs and/or requirements. In order to obtain a successful job after completing higher education, you must have certain accreditation saying you are qualified for this career. In order to obtain this accreditation, you first must take courses that offer you a vast educational background. The humanities play a huge role in the competition, correct accreditation, money and lesser chance of returning to school all offer students a better well-rounded educational background which proves the humanities to be superior to STEM education.
Five decades ago, college was assumed mostly for the wealthy, not for the majority of the American population. Ten years ago, people assumed that all high school graduates will go to college, but yet today, far more number of people do not attend college than it was anticipated a decade ago. Why? Our society is mostly governed by a small number of people who occupy power. Those with power create a system that’s favorable to themselves and others in power. This directly and indirectly affects populations in the middle class and the lower class, especially when it comes to education. Over the years, the value of a college degree has increased in all terms, whether economically or socially. The knowledge gained from college is a great
College education is the highest level of education that a person could attain in American society, and rightly so. It is the highest education level because it offers the most advanced knowledge for general and specific endeavors; and while this is great and all, college is a lot more than an arm's reach away. These people who cannot afford or do not have the opportunity to get into college but the ability or the drive for the field they want to work in. This is an issue which has lead to the degradation of many people. This reveals the issue in American society where a piece of paper determines your social standing; and it really shouldn't. In the job market a valuable place in a company/business cannot only rely on a degree, individual intellectual ability must also be a valuable factor even if a degree is not possessed.
