Throughout history, religion has shaped individual’s lives for many different reasons. The Civil War is commonly known to be fought over the issue of slavery, but religion did play a major role before, during, and after the war. People who’s religion was against slavery believed they needed to fight for what they believe in and stop slavery no matter what it takes. People who’s religion was against slavery helped build the
Underground Railroad to help slaves get out.(“Underground Railroad”). People from religious groups also held meetings and conferences and also gave speeches for their cause.( “the African American odyssey”). Members from religious groups were one of the first people to protest against the African American slave trade.( “Religion during the Civil War”). People not only protested but they also sent petition to stop slavery with thousands of signatures to Congress. (“the African American odyssey”)

Religion played a major role before, during, and after the war. It may not have been the initial reason for fighting but it certainty became a central aspect in the lives of people involved in the war. It helped the people shape why and how to help the slaves. People in the community read and wrote books about religion and the inspiration it gave them.
