December 7th, 1941 is a date known by many people, both American and others. On that day, over three hundred Japanese fighter airplanes attacked the naval base on Pearl Harbor. It was a surprise attack nobody had expected, and because of that, Japan managed to do a lot of damage. About 3000 people died, and the United States lost many military weapons and soldiers. In this paper, I will explain the happenings leading up to the attack, and how the United States reacted after the attack. I will also answer the question of how the attack affected the United States entrance the war.
In the years between World War 1 and World War 2, The United States retreated to an isolated foreign Policy. They closed prohibitions of selling weapons to nations in war. President Franklin D. Roosevelt named himself to representative for currents. He held the quarantine speech October 1937, a speech aimed to Italy, Japan and Germany. After the outbreak of the war, and Roosevelt’s reelection in 1940, The United States slowly went from staying neutral to be an increasing support for Great Britain.
The United States helped Great Britain with 50 old gigantic warships. They got military bases on Newfoundland, Bermuda and on the British Caribbean islands in return. The British could buy weapons from The United States by the “cash and carry”-clauses, which involves cash payment and the buyer have to get the goods.
