John is arguably the most dynamic character throughout the crucible, he undergoes many changes and his outlook is constantly evolving. The first sign of his overwhelming amount of guilt is when he states “I will cut off my hands before I ever reach for you again” (Miller 22) referring to his young mistress Abigail. In The Crucible, Arthur Miller captured the fear of Americans during the time of the Red Scare and made it into a play about the Salem Witch Trials. The story follows John Proctor, a married, middle-aged, hard-working man, but the least bit faithful to his Puritan religion. John Proctor made the ultimate choice to commit adultery, and it affected his faithfulness to the Puritan religion. When faced with a challenge, he was unable to recite the 10 Commandments, and was exposed for working instead of attending church on Sundays.
“… Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery, Thou Shall Not Lie” (Exodus 20:14). John Proctor was the tragic hero of Arthur Miller Crucible; even though it seems as if he is the bad guy because he cheats on his wife and withholds information from the court, he becomes a hero in the end when he dies for his and for the truth. Due to the fact that it was difficult for him to get out of trouble, he committed adultery and was ashamed to admit it. John Proctor slept with Abigail who was a minor. “… I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then, and you do now.”
John Proctor has encountered many changes in The Crucible. In the beginning, he is not introduced as a decent man. In Act one and two, he admits to infidelity with Abigail. The play is set in a town where the religious group is exceptionally strict and prominent. This gives us a terrible picture of him as a man who commits infidelity and isn't accepted to truly value or appreciate Elizabeth.
This is really terrible story, and I can’t believe it happened in real world. I think if they were not Religious, it might happen but more small thing. They knew the bible, Jesus, and God, so they don’t like Witches and Evil. But if the city didn’t know that just doctor said something mental sick, or crazy.
Finally he has the ultimate change from doing God’s work to doing the Devils. In the beginning of the play when Reverend Hale shows up he flat out tells the people of Salem that he comes to do God’s work. He believes that he is doing God’s work as well as he gets rid of all of the “witches” in Salem. But as Danforth condemes Elizabeth Proctor, Martha Corey, Rebbecca Nurse, and then finally John Proctor he begins to rethink all that has happened. This changes his ideas and he turns into doing the Devil’s work. “Why, it is all simple. I come to do the Devil’s work. I come to counsel Christians they should belie themselves,”(Miller 131). Now when Reverend Hale says this to Danforth when they ask him why he has returned to Salem. When he says
