Hrothgar's Reputation In 'Beowulf'

Reputation is the view people have of an individual based upon the actions of that being and several other variables. To some, reputation is everything and this point of view is incredibly prominent in the epic poem, Beowulf, which displays this outlook on multiple occasions during the tale. Reputation plays an important role in the development of each character throughout Beowulf and aids the creation of a persona for every important person and creature in Beowulf. The largest reputation in the tale, Beowulf, belongs to Beowulf himself. As the reader continues further into the story, it becomes increasingly obvious that Beowulf has the reputation of a courageous, outstanding warrior. This reputation is displayed immediately following the introduction of Beowulf when he decides to venture to Denmark in an attempt to save Hrothgar’s mead hall from the destruction of Grendel, a monstrous demon. It is known that Hrothgar is an amazing leader and loved by all his followers. This is displayed by how Hrothgar developed the Scyldings into a prosperous society and erected the mead hall, Heorot, to provide his people with a place of joy and happiness. It is also acknowledged that Hrothgar is an extremely generous leader. Hrothgar’s generosity is visible on numerous occasions, including when Beowulf arrives and offers aid for the kingdom, and in return Hrothgar holds a feast for the hero. In the tale, Hrothgar provides Beowulf with a large bounty after he defeats each demon, such as when he tells Beowulf “there’ll be nothing you’ll want for, no worldly goods that won’t be yours” (Beowulf 60) at the feast following Beowulf’s defeat of Grendel.
