The Renaissance was a time that revisited the ideas of antiquity from the culture of their ancient ancestors in order to reach "modern" views that were able to rise above the backward views of the Middle Ages. Antiquity is the cultural ideas rooted in the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Renaissance was a time period that stepped back hundreds of years in order to renew and rebirth the culture that was nearly lost as the Middle Ages began. This was the initial steps taken towards capitalism that was driven by banks and taxes imposed by the princes and diverted away from primarily trading. Humanism gave rise to revisiting ancient Roman texts and the adoption of ancient Roman ideals. It also led to republican ideology as well as an increase call to public servant (Mares). This caused a huge cultural shift especially when a Christian spin was implicated onto it. The Christian Humanism stressed an interest in Christian faith which led to people such as Erasmus who learned Hebrew in order to comprehend the Old Testament and notes taken by rabbi commentators in its original language (Pavlac 175). These scholars wanted to provide the public with the most pure form of Christianity by reading the original texts. Even though the idea of Christian Humanism was to make a more critical view of Christianity, it still let the massive witch hunts and the belief of witchcraft become widely accepted. Little is known as to why or what caused the sporadic and massive outbreak of witch hunts and executions of those accused of being a witch or warlock.
