This is the story of a hurricane. Before Hurricane Harvey came, I stocked up non-perishable foods just in case power outage, filled up the gas tank and charged the devices. Watching the meteorologist in different stations gave me an anxiety attack. They were saying we were going to have thirty to forty inches of rain, flooded streets and houses. That was day one on Friday. Day two on Saturday I was in the house all day watching the news and the forecast. I was asking myself what happened to the rain or the meteorologist exaggerated? That’s not until I watched the Pre-Texan game when the rain started pouring down. About half way to the game my light started going on and off. Hoping my light does not turn off, of course, it did, but luckily
Over the past decade, the world has experienced more natural disaster than people can count. Floods, mudslides, earthquakes, and raging fires are just a few of the events that have stripped people away from their families, homes, and possessions. The deadliest of these natural disasters are hurricanes. Extremely strong winds mixed with large waves can cause enormous damage, taking months, even years for towns to recover. Hurricane Katrina left millions of people without homes and families torn apart. Hurricane Sandy demolished the Jersey coast, leaving years of repair work behind. The most recent and powerful hurricane that surfaced is Hurricane Maria. A level five hurricane, Hurricane Maria ripped straight through the United States territory of Puerto Rico. The island lost power, supplies
Gas prices are considered to be returning to normal as most of the oil refineries are reopening following the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. Many of the drivers in Houston were affected by the increase in gas prices and long lines at the gas stations when Hurricane Harvey hit. Due to Harvey’s landfall, it caused most of the Texas population to flock to the pumps, in fear of a long-term gas shortage. Denton Cinquegrana, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service stated, “The national average gas price has peaked to $2.67, following the hurricane. This was around a 35-cent increase from pre-Harvey levels.” The increase in gas prices was a “result of coastal oil refineries electing to shut down, rather than wanting to

As I am typing this hurricane Harvey has just left many people in Texas without a home. Some people lost everything and other people lost nothing. There were lives lost and to make matters worst another hurricane is coming and hitting Florida. These events actually make my desire of becoming a doctor stronger. By watching YouTube videos and the news it shows me how bad it is and makes me want to volunteer and help out. Right now, I know that I can't go there and help, but I could donate to my school's NHS to help those affected by the hurricane. In the future, I know that i want to be more involved. I am really determined to learn what I need to learn in order to be a doctor. Once I have successed and have started maikng money I will give back to my community and to all who helped me and supported me to become what I wanted to be.
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive hurricanes to ever hit the United States, causing damage across the entire Southeast, with the harshest conditions falling on the city of New Orleans. This hurricane began as the consequence of a tropical wave encountering the traces of an earlier tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico. Once the wave and depression interacted, a new depression formed, located right near the Bahamas. This depression intensified exponentially, developing into a complete hurricane. Katrina wreaked havoc for slightly less than a week before subsiding over the eastern Great Lakes. This hurricane had catastrophic social and economic effects on the Southeast requiring a lengthy reconstruction period.

When a disaster strikes and it is so sever that the local governments and the State governments together cannot provide the needed resources, the federal government then becomes the source for resources. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is the Federal agency that coordinates the activation of the Federal Response Plan (FRP). However, due to past hurricanes and incidents, the response of FEMA has demonstrated that the government is not prepared to defend the US population as a whole. As demonstrated on Wednesday October 19, 2005, Hurricane Wilma intensified into a Category 5 hurricane within a 24 hours time frame. Hurricane Wilma produced sustained winds of over 173 miles per hour and with the atmospheric pressure of 882 millibars,
Natural disasters can bring communities together, even if they have been torn apart. One morning, residents of New Orleans emerged from various shelters and their homes to examine the remnants of Hurricane Katrina. Several hours later, they realized there was more devastation awaiting them. Hours later, “…a breach in the levees allowed water to continue to rise until whole neighborhoods were flooded.” Hurricane Katrina brought great attention to the lack of local and disaster relief programs. Most programs are not designed or funded to help assist people for more than four or five weeks. When federal assistance money (FEMA) started to run out, the people were expected to find jobs or get help from other government agencies. This only caused
