While reading the Crucible people may believe that witch trials are a thing of the past, but the truth is that witch hysteria is a conflict people even face today. Witch hysteria was first felt in 1692 when a group of young girls said they were possessed. This started to spread and everyone would accuse others of being witches. Lot of people were tried, and if they denied being a witch they would be hung. 20 people were put to death as a result of the trials. Looking at the Salem trials, as well as more recent events we can tell that human nature wants an explanation for the unexplainable. People around the world put faith into a religion that they believe in. In Between Heaven and Hell, the author says “The bible is the supreme authority on Earth(Between).” This quote helps to explain just how much faith people put into their religion. They look to religion to answer questions. Because of this, a lot of negative things that occur could be seen as a result of witchcraft. This is when things such as the Salem Witch Trials occur. However, instead of being related to witchcraft the Red Scare was hysteria about communism. One major difference was the amount of people affected, “The Salem Witch Trials were limited in their scope,...the Red Scare was expansive in its scope(Withers).” This tells us that the Red Scare was more commonly known, and a lot more people were affected. Mainly because it affected the whole United States rather than just a small town. Also, it didn’t just affect people of one religion. This allowed it to affect more people, and also become more well known. This also occurred because people weren’t entirely sure what communism was, so they took it into their own hands to determine who was related to communism and who wasn’t.
