When one hears the title I Am Legend being mentioned, they usually associate it with Will Smith and the terrific job he did in portraying the protagonist of the story Robert Neville. However, what they typically leave out is the equally terrific job done by author Richard Matheson coming up with the storyline and writing the original book version. While Richard Matheson’s post-apocalyptic science fiction book, I Am Legend, and Francis Lawrence’s post-apocalyptic science fiction movie, I Am Legend, both have similarities and differences, in the end, the original book version prevails mainly because the movie version alters the original storyline too much. In the movie, Robert Neville is a scientist who was unable to stop the spread of the …show more content…
It is definitely one of the movie's strongest points. The look of the movie gives an eerie while also beautiful quality to it, enhancing viewers look on the movie as a whole. The music used in this movie was mainly used to help establish the mood for each scene. The music that was chosen for specific parts of the movie was really geared towards enhancing the feeling for viewers. The lighting was also used to establish the mood but it was also important to the plot of the movie. The lighting played a key part in the movie because day and night, light and dark, were two completely different scenarios. During the daytime, Neville and his dog got to travel and move around freely while at night they had to stay locked up in his house. The reason for this being that the infected humans couldn’t be out in the light so during the day they stayed hidden in dark areas while at night they could roam freely. The camera work was very crafty in this movie. There was a lot of free space in many of the outdoors shots, which could’ve possibly symbolized the emptiness the world now had. The indoor shots were more typical and were tighter, switching up the feel a little (Miller). Richard Matheson’s book I Am Legend falls under the genre of science fiction. Critics performing analysis of I Am Legend often say it is a metaphor for the spread of communism, especially since it was written during the height of the cold
Unfortunately, a lot of the violence that plays out through the Kubrick motion picture version of “The Shining” was in the form of domestic abuse that plays out with Jack and his wife Wendy and is quite strained and difficult as they constantly argue with each other over past situations such as Danny accident. While in the novel, they had a difficult relationship, but it was also a loving relationship that wasn’t quite as strained. Yet in the film the malicious viciousness is felt through the words the actors say, for instance, when Jack had finally lost his sanity and is attempting to attack Wendy he says to her, “Wendy, darling, light of my life. I’m not gonna hurt you. You didn’t let me finish my sentence. I said I’m not gonna hurt ya.
In a report published by UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) it states that there are around 300,000 child soldiers, participating in over 30 different conflicts worldwide. Of these 300,000, 120,000 are serving in different countries in Africa. One of the countries where this issue has been extremely prevalent is Sierra Leone, where child soldiers made up a significant part of the armed forces during its 11-year civil war, with 10,000 out of about 50,000 soldiers being children. Accounts of child soldiers in Sierra Leone have been made, with both the book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and the movie Ezra telling the story of a Sierra Leonean child soldier. Even though both the book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah and the movie Ezra by Newton Aduaka are important works, A Long Way Gone is more important to help people think critically and understand important aspects of the world around them.
The depiction of China during the cold war in the textbook and the movie “to live” have many similarities and differences. While the history textbook has mentioned how people were forced to join collective farms in around 1940s, the movie “ To Live” do not. This is important because it is one of the main characteristics of China in the Cold War. The goals of Mao’s Marxist socialism is to have high production for industry and make China into a civilized nation. On the other side, the movie didn’t mention that much about collective farms. The beginning of the movie focuses on gambling more in the period 1940s. Another important difference is that the textbook focuses more the cultural revolution and the red guards while the movie “ To Live” has mentioned about the
Being an extraordinary writer, C. S. Lewis’s books series The Chronicles of Narnia have been made into a series of movies that are delightful for all ages. The main series of movies was created by Disney and varies from the books more than another version that was created by the BBC. Although the movies are good and are said follow the story it could be said when comparing the two The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe in can be said that the book is better because it lets the reader live the story instead of just watching it. The book elaborates more when the wardrobe is first entered, when Aslan is killed and brought back to life, and then again when the end battle happens.
In my opinion, the movie I am Legend is a fantastic movie for many reasons being from plot, to characters, and to the producer. The plot was based on a 1954 horror book I am Legend by Richard Matheson. This story is what he is most well-known for and made him popular. Richard had many great works and those got him the chance to write sixteen episodes for the popular television show The Twilight Zone. This television show aired from 1959 to 1964 with five seasons and 156 episodes. Making the book into a movie shows that it was a good enough story to get to
Previously Lawrence has directed, (highly ranked do not even cover it; worshiped by critics) movies such as “The Hunger Games” and “Water for Elephants”. This gave current “Francis Lawrence” fans outrageous expectations and therefore this movie was not taken with an ease. The fact that Lawrence has worked to obtain a higher standard definitely reflects on the movie screen. “I am legend” is a movie directed with every thought centered on the viewer’s experience towards the movie.
Dystopia is a society or place that is unpleasant and bad. Dystopian movies are often based on themes that play out in the real world. The dystopian movie “I am Legend” by Frances Lawrence has a theme of Loss of Humanity. I am Legend is about a woman who spread a virus saying it was the cure to cancer. The cure that was said to be the cure to cancer, killed everyone in the city and Dr. Robert Neville is trying to find a cure to the virus that affected the the entire city. I socially inept and mentally broken hero may very well have passed with a scornful chuckle from Hollywood’s gentry. Tasked with reinvigorating Richard Matheson’s sci-fi-horror page turner; I am Legend, Francis Lawrence puts this very notion into blockbuster filmic practice with 2007’s aptly titled; I am Legend. Lawrence rewrites the doctrine of supremacy, violence and impenetrability that has too long governed pop-culture heroism, instead, defining his hero; protagonist and military virologist Dr Robert Neville, with normal imperfections and a humanness so brilliantly atypical to the banal muscly-do-gooder stereotype.
The novel “To Live” by Yu Hua is considered “one of the last decade’s ten most influential books in China”. The film adaptation of “To Live” directed by Zhang Yimou came out two years later is still banned. Presentation of life during the rise and rule of communism in the film was almost positive in comparison to the novel. In the novel Yu uses a folk song collector’s ten-year-old memory of Fugui reflecting on his life to set the tone of the novel as a depiction of one individual’s life. The most significant difference between the novel and the film is Zhang’s decision to omit the frame story from the film which shifts Fugui’s character from a passive conformist to an active one and closes the emotional distance between the audience and the characters.
Why is it that books and their movies are so different? All of you probably finished The Hound of the Baskervilles by now, and you must have seen the movie. You haven’t seen the movie yet? Really? Are you sure? I remember seeing you watch the movie, so you can stop lying now. Ok, now where was I? Oh yeah, I was talking about how books and their movies are so different. I’m sure you noticed that there are multiply differences in between the book and movie. A lot of times they need to make changes in the movie to make the audience more excited or intrigued at certain times, also they shorten the movie because if they make it to long the audience could get bored. They change the movie to give them a feeling or a
I have recently seen the movie of this book and I have noticed that it is more similar than I expected. There is very similar ideas and events in the book as their are in the movie. The book is much more plausible in its minor detail. In the movie the protagonist Jason Bourne is fished out of the sea and he has bullets in his back and then one of the crew of the boat performs surgery on him while on a boat. In the book Jason Bourne is taken to a nearby doctor who performs surgery on him.
Dystopian movies are based on an unpleasant society and often themes that play out in reality. Stories are built on universal storytelling elements and literary devices as they intertwine with the central theme of the story. In the dystopian movie, ‘I Am Legend’ by Francis Lawrence the primary theme of loss of humanity is delivered in a manner that reflects these elements. This movie is ultimately based on a disease that affected the population of New York and the finding of the cure. Reaching the reader's emotions, symbolism, heroic scenarios and interesting ways in which a story is told structure this movie and play off of the theme of loss in humanity.
The film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel, I am Legend, was released in December of 2007. Starring Will Smith, and directed by Francis Lawrence, the movie utilizes a viral outbreak, instead of a bacterium (like the book), to spread the disease (Lawrence).
