1. Introduction: Marguerite also known as “Maya” sees beauty as being a blond white girl instead of an African American girl. Becoming a white girl is the only way she feels that she can escape the black hole that she feels she’s so constantly sucked into. In the book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, written by Maya Angelou, Marguerite states “I was going to look like one of the sweet little white girls who were everybody 's dream of what was right with the world”(Introduction). Also, Marguerite states “Because I was really white and because a cruel fairy stepmother, who was understandably jealous of my beauty, had turned me into a too-big Negro girl, with nappy hair, broad feet and a space between her teeth that would hold a number-two pencil”(Introduction). These two statements made by Marguerite shows that her vision of beauty was being a blond white girl, although she’s black. It seems as if being black, to her, is almost a sin, as she often speaks negatively of herself. The standard of beauty for a young black man in my culture is not what most people may assume it to be. The standard of beauty for a young black man in my culture is not about what you look like, or what materialistic things you may have, but about knowing who you are, and what you have on the inside. Being a respectful young man is one of the most key essentials of beauty in my culture. Also, having a positive goal in life and a plan to get there, is real beauty. If you’re respectful and you
