Imagery In Invisible Man

The idea of wanting to prevent oneself from continuing to be invisible to society is a long and dreadful journey. Invisible man is a novel narrated in a first person by an African American that goes in depth of racism, white supremacy, insecurities which surprisingly leads to self-realization. In Invisible Man, Ellison demonstrates through imagery, symbols, and vivid details how although the invisible man is in the process of creating a vision for himself, he is still limited by racial discrimination.
By using imagery, Ellison shows how the invisible man cannot see the power he actually holds when it comes to battling against those who want to see him fail in life. The invisible man knows he lacks self-confidence so he says, “I am invisible, …show more content…

The invisible man has always looked up to Dr.Bledose in having his back, however that changed when he said, “ That’s my life, telling white folks how to think about the things I know about… but I have made my place in it and I’ll have every negro hanging on it” (143). The word “negro” that was negativity expressed symbolizes how people are always going to disappear during the struggle but somehow appear during your success. Dr. Bledose is an unpleasant person for not being there for his community when in need. On his last day in Mary’s, the narrator saw, “the last-iron figure of a very black, red-lipped and wide-mouthed Negro, whose eyes white eyes stared up at me from the floor/It was a bank” (319).The coin symbolizes demeaning black labels and it agitated the invisible man because it mentally took him back to brotherhood and even all the way back to slavery. Although the invisible man knows that white supremacy is everywhere, he was still surprised someone in Mary hasn’t token the bank down. Similarly, when the invisible man was in downtown, he saw, “a window decorated with switches of wiry false hair, ointment guaranteed to produce the miracle of whitening black skin. “You too can be truly beautiful/ win greater happiness with whiter complexion, a sign proclaimed” (262).
